Veřovice lies on the upper reaches of the Jičínka. The Veřovické vrchy nature trail, the Velký kámen rock face and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary offer different focal points for a stay: trails and landscape, geology, and architectural history. If you would like to combine nature and local history, you can choose which of these themes to focus on according to your travel interests.

Landscape and Geology

Velký kámen is in the Hodslavický Javorník, about 2 km southeast of Veřovice. The rock face features exposures of flysch rocks from the Outer Western Carpathians. The site also has a valuable geomorphological formation and a natural forest fragment with high biodiversity. Nature enthusiasts can therefore explore two themes side by side: the rock formations of the cliff and the diversity of the forest habitat. Its approximate location relative to Veřovice provides a sense of its position; flysch describes the geological character of the site.

Trails and Activities

The Veřovické vrchy nature trail has 13 stops, is 21 km long and has an elevation gain of 600 metres. These figures highlight different aspects of the route: its length makes it a distinct factor in planning, the stops identify it as a nature trail, and the elevation gain adds further information about its scale. The route is suitable for hiking and can also be used for cross-country skiing in winter when snow and trail conditions are suitable.

A route from Veřovice to Velký Javorník follows a cycle path that can also be used with a stroller. Different considerations come into play when choosing between the options: would you like to focus on the nature trail as a hike or, when conditions are suitable, as a cross-country ski route, or is stroller access on the cycle path important? This makes it easier to choose an activity that suits your planned outing.

Church and Local History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1854 on the site of a wooden church dating from 1784. Its building history therefore spans two clearly dated stages. The church is 45 metres long; including the sacristy, it is 50 metres long. It is 17.5 metres wide and 35 metres high. The two length measurements can be understood as follows: the 50-metre measurement includes the sacristy.

The church is located at Veřovice 143, 742 73 Veřovice. For precise navigation, check the address locally before setting off. There is also a wolf sculpture on the access road from Fojtství. It is another specific cultural detail alongside the church’s architectural history.

Railway History

Two dates also mark Veřovice’s railway history. The Kojetín–Ostrava line, which passes through Veřovice, was built in 1888. The Veřovice–Studénka connecting line branches off at Veřovice and dates from 1896. The dates show the sequence: the connecting line to Studénka followed the Kojetín–Ostrava line. The railway lines thus add another aspect of local history to the area’s natural and architectural heritage.
