Seven old slate mines or mining sites have been preserved in the Nový Svět area. In Odry’s urban heritage zone, townhouses from several periods shape the ensemble; viewpoints and the forested landscape in the surrounding region add to its cultural attractions. A stay here can therefore focus on different themes: local history, mining, and time outdoors.

Townscape and cultural history

Odry’s urban heritage zone is bounded by the natural line of the former town walls. At its heart is a stylistically diverse ensemble of townhouses with late medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque features. Rather than a uniform architectural style, you will find different architectural periods represented within the same heritage zone.

One dated detail in the town’s history is the bell of St. Bartholomew’s Church, which was cast in 1374. The permanent exhibition “Ó Odra” at the Muzeum Oderska offers a different perspective. Dedicated to the Odra River and life along its course, it was updated in 2025. This brings a specific historical date and the broader history of the river together as distinct cultural themes.

At the Bastion in Odry, you can view a collection of beer glasses, bricks, and tiles. The collection adds other objects and building materials to the exploration of the townhouses. For a culture-focused stay, the heritage zone, church, museum, and bastion thus offer different points of interest rather than simply revisiting the same history from different angles.

Mining trails and Flascharův důl

The K Flascharovu dolu educational trail is about 3.5 kilometres long and has 15 information panels. It leads through the Nový Svět mining area, where seven old slate mines or mining sites have been preserved. The trail is suitable for families with children.

Flascharův důl is one of only two publicly accessible slate mines in Czechia. Visitors can explore 400 metres of underground tunnels there. After the tour, you can use special scissors to carve a slate heart yourself. The visit therefore combines exploring the mine with a hands-on activity using the material.

The Stříbrný chodník educational trail covers a different mining topic: the history of mining silver-bearing ores. The two trails therefore differ in their historical focus—slate mining in the Nový Svět area on one, and the extraction of silver-bearing ores on the other. If you are interested in mining history, these themes can help you decide which perspective best suits your outing.

Views, scenery, and mountain biking

The Pohoř–Olšová observation platform is 13 metres high. From there, the view extends across the Moravian Gate to the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. This offers a different way to experience the surrounding area from walking through the landscape: the viewpoint looks out over named geographical regions, while the trails let you explore on foot.

In the region around Odry, the Oderské vrchy were designated a nature park in 1994. Their forested landscape, with numerous natural attractions, invites visitors to take walks throughout the year. This offers a clear choice when planning your trip: the heritage zone and mining history provide cultural attractions, while walks in the Oderské vrchy offer a way to spend time in nature.

Another activity is HEIBIKEPARK, a gravity-based downhill mountain bike park for beginners and experienced riders. The park offers bike and equipment rentals; check before you travel whether the services you need are available. Downhill mountain biking is quite different from the educational trails and walks, offering a distinct option for planning your stay.
