A castle park with three differently designed areas, a listed church and a green-marked hiking route showcase different sides of Spálov. In the church, the architectural form and furnishings can be distinguished by two dates; the park combines French and English garden design, and the hiking route leads from Heřmánky train stop to Spálov. When looking for a holiday apartment, this range of options can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: historic buildings, garden landscapes or hiking.
Church and Castle History
The Church of St. James the Greater (Kostel sv. Jakuba Staršího) is listed as a property in Spálov in the state register of immovable cultural monuments. Its present form dates from 1734; inside is a pewter baptismal font bearing the year 1619. A fortress is considered to have preceded Spálov Castle. During alterations from 1883 to 1885, a viewing terrace was added to the castle. This makes it possible to distinguish between different periods: the dated furnishings, the church’s present form and later alterations to the castle. There are 115 years between the year 1619 on the baptismal font and the date of 1734 for the church’s present form.
The Three-Part Castle Park
Spálov Castle Park is divided into three areas: one with a pond, a formal French-style section and an informal English-style landscape garden section. The contrast between the two garden styles makes the difference between a formal layout and an informal landscape park clear; the pond area forms a third element. The formal French garden was laid out under Emanuel Kajetán Záviše z Osenic; the years 1743–1769 refer to him. The areas described cover a total of about 1.2 hectares. Together, these offer clearly distinct designs and an approximate figure for the total area.
Pilgrimage Site, Windmill and Festival
Panna Maria ve Skále is a pilgrimage site in the Oder Valley. The Balerův windmill near Spálov was built by František Baler in 1929 and is considered the smallest Dutch-type windmill in Czechia. The traditional Spálovské hody festival features music, entertainment and good food. Its specific annual programme may vary. Unlike the dated buildings, the festival is a reason to travel with a changing programme: check the specific date if the hody are to be a highlight of your stay.
Hiking and Nature
The green-marked hiking route from Heřmánky train stop to Spálov is about four kilometres long and climbs 200 metres. The approximate distance and the ascent answer different planning questions: How long is the route, and how much elevation gain is involved? Take both figures into account when planning your day. Spálov also has its own nature reserve, Královec. Královec is Spálov’s own nature reserve.
