Velké Albrechtice lies in a valley on the Bílovka River, southeast of Bílovec. The village’s history includes the Late Gothic Church of St John the Baptist, historical memorials in the cemetery, and the archaeological site of a water castle. There are also opportunities for active exploration: several cycling routes pass through the village, while hills, winter terrain and bodies of water offer further ways to connect with the landscape. You can focus on cultural history or combine it with cycling and other activities.

Church and cemetery: building history across several periods

The Church of St John the Baptist dates from the first half of the 15th century and is listed in the state register of monuments. Its tower contains two bells from 1505 and 1508. Another important date is 1820, when the church received a new vault. Its building history thus encompasses its Late Gothic origins, the two bells and a later alteration to the building. These different dates offer greater insight into the church’s history than a single year of construction would.

Beside the church, the cemetery boundary wall has a core dating from the 16th century. In places, it is up to three metres high. Age and height refer to different features: the century dates the wall’s core, while the height refers to certain sections. The local cemetery is also home to a war memorial to the First World War, erected in 1923. Its artistic design is by the academic sculptor Engelbert Kaps from Saubsdorf. The cemetery also contains the Hrobka Sedlnických z Choltic: this family tomb is designed as a wall and features two family coats of arms and eight gravestones of family members. The war memorial and family tomb thus focus on different things—one commemorates the First World War, while the other is dedicated to the Sedlnických z Choltic family.

The water castle and its landscape

The archaeological site of the Velké Albrechtice water castle is listed as a cultural monument. The pond at the site is a remnant of the former moat. The water castle was probably built to protect a trade route that ran through the Bílovka valley, and fell into disrepair at the end of the 15th century. When considering its history, it is important to distinguish between the different degrees of certainty: the protection of the trade route is a probable interpretation, while the castle’s decline is dated to the end of the 15th century. The pond, in turn, connects the site to its former fortifications.

Cycling and other activities

Cycling routes 6190 and 6011 pass through Velké Albrechtice. The Kolem osmnáctého poledníku cycling circuit also runs through the village. This circuit is listed as 47 kilometres long with 780 metres of elevation gain; both figures refer to the entire loop. This distinguishes the numbered routes, which are known to pass through the village, from the circuit, for which the total distance and elevation gain are specified. The climbs near Tísek and Čavisov on the circuit offer views of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids and the Ostrava Basin. For route 6190, it is advisable to check the current signage before setting off.

There are also ways to enjoy the landscape away from the bicycle: the hills above Velké Albrechtice offer views of the Beskids, and the surrounding terrain is suitable for cross-country skiing in winter. For fishing, the nearby Jamník and Bílovka waterways and the Setina trout fishing area are options. Another sporting event is Běh Velkými Albrechticemi, a 10-kilometre running event organised by the local sports club. The activities differ not only in form, but also in how they relate to the village and its surroundings.
