A stone cross dating from 1822, church and chapel architecture, and trails through the Oder floodplain shape the opportunities for exploration in Jeseník Nad Odrou. The town lies in the southwestern part of the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. When planning your trip, both cultural and historical landmarks and a variety of options for walking and cycling take centre stage.
Local History and Architectural Styles
The stone cross by the church is of local origin and shows that the Baroque sculptural tradition continued into the 19th century. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the village square. It is considered one of the earliest depictions of its kind in northern Moravia and was erected before the saint’s canonisation.
The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands on the site of a wooden church that burned down in 1710. Its nave was added in 1752 at the expense of František Rheinold z Andlernu. The Chapel of Saint Anne is in the centre of the village, beside house no. 8. Its elongated form has a slightly narrower, recessed semicircular end; it also features a volute gable and a small roof turret with a lantern.
The château and estate in Jeseník nad Odrou were built by Rudolf svobodný pán z Wittenu. Visitors can currently enjoy the historic ambience in the château and dine in the restaurant and in the outdoor area of the château park. As the offerings may change, it is best to check their availability before your visit.
Trails with Different Themes
The Stezka krajinou povodní trail runs through the Oder floodplain between Jeseník, Bernartice and Suchdol nad Odrou. Its terrain is suitable for walkers and for cyclists with trekking or mountain bikes. Along the Cyklostezka Okolo Poodří, eight information panels describe the natural, landscape and cultural features of Poodří. This easy cycling route is also suitable for families with children.
Another option is Františkova cesta: this easy circular trail starts in Jeseník nad Odrou-Blahutovice, is about 4.5 km long and has ten stops. As a meditative spiritual educational trail, it draws on themes from the Canticle of the Sun by Saint Francis of Assisi and passes through Blahutovice and the surrounding area. The trails therefore differ in their intended use, stated length and main theme. As trail conditions may change, check the current situation before setting out.
Spring Water and a Protected River Landscape
Jesenická kyselka is a cold, carbonated spring water with a low mineral content. A public tap is accessible year-round. The spring can be reached by car without access restrictions; the site is within 250 m of the access area.
Jesenický pramen offers a one-hour experience that combines an excursion with making your own herbal syrup. Check whether this offer is available before your visit.
The Meandry Staré Odry natural monument protects a remnant of the Oder’s original, highly meandering riverbed, with numerous periodic pools and riverside vegetation. Motor vehicles are prohibited in the natural monument. Take this restriction into account when planning.
