Kunín brings together a Baroque castle, the history of its castle school, a church and a local museum. Cycling and hiking trails offer more ways to explore the area. When planning your visit, you can focus on its cultural history or add a walking or cycling route.
Kunín Castle and its rooms
Kunín Castle is a Baroque castle built for the Counts of Harrach between 1726 and 1734, to plans by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. The tour includes furnished guest rooms and bedrooms, former classrooms of the castle school, an art gallery, a hunting room and a ladies’ room. A large dining hall, as well as music and dance rooms, are also part of the tour. The different rooms connect the castle’s history with its former use as a school.
A guided tour of the castle lasts 90 minutes and is intended for groups of at least three and no more than 20 people. Shorter tours can be arranged for school and senior groups. Allow for this duration when planning your visit, and check the latest visitor information in advance.
Kunín Castle Park is freely accessible to wheelchair users. This information applies to the park, making it a separate part of a castle visit alongside the indoor rooms.
Church and local history
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross also offers a distinct perspective on Kunín’s history. Its foundation stone was laid in 1810; it was the first work of the young master builder Franz Biela. The church was intended for all denominations and echoed the interdenominational educational concept of the nearby castle school. Those interested in the school and its history will find a link between the castle and the church.
The Muzeum starého Kunewaldu (Museum of Old Kunewald) comprises two rooms presenting the history of the municipality of Kunín. Its collections include original documents and finds from the municipality. Also on display are traditional costumes donated by German residents who were expelled after the Second World War, as well as objects relating to Skoronice and the Kunín parish. The collection broadens the focus from the castle’s history to other aspects of the municipality.
The natural history cabinet features a newly arranged mineralogical and paleontological exhibition. Bronislav Novosad from Kunín assembled it for the restored castle. It complements the historical themes with natural history collections.
Cycling and hiking routes
The 40-kilometre Okolo Poodří cycling route lists Kunín Castle as a point of interest. It runs mainly along paved cycle paths with no or very little car traffic. As route conditions may change, check them before setting out. The Jantarová stezka cycling route also passes through Kunín.
For a hike, consider the Novojičínská kopretina educational trail, which can be followed from the railway station in Nový Jičín towards Kunín. Check the local trail markers before travelling. The two routes offer different planning options: one is described as a cycling route with a stated total length, while the other is an educational trail heading towards Kunín.
Practical information for getting around
The “Kunín, zdravotní středisko” bus stop is right in front of the entrance to Sedlákův trh. If you plan to visit the market, check the latest stop and business information in advance. Sedlákův trh has a small café where you can enjoy a coffee and something sweet after shopping. This lets you combine a visit to the market with a break without having to plan another destination.
When choosing accommodation, you can decide which aspect of Kunín you want to shape your stay: the castle, church and museum focus on local and cultural history, while the cycling and hiking trails offer opportunities for outdoor activity. The tour duration, group size and route details provide practical points of reference for planning.
