Cultural and nature-related experiences go hand in hand during a stay in Studénka: railway history, castle architecture and nature trails connected to the landscape. Choosing a focus can shape the character of your trip. Those primarily interested in transport history and historic buildings will find different points of interest from travelers who want to explore birdwatching, ponds and diverse habitats. You can start planning by organizing your options around your interests.
Railway history in the castle building
The Vagonářské muzeum is housed in the castle building in Studénka. It presents the historical development of rail transport and carriage manufacturing; the museum also features a working model railway. This brings together transport history and carriage manufacturing, complemented by an operational model.
Protected buildings and park
The buildings of Starý a nový zámek in Studénka are listed cultural monuments. The park around Starý a nový zámek contains numerous notable non-native woody plants. The protected architectural heritage and the variety of woody plants offer contrasting points of interest.
Zámek Nová Horka: architectural history and nature
Zámek Nová Horka is a three-winged, two-storey Baroque castle built in the 1740s on the site of a Renaissance fortress. The construction period and the site's history can be distinguished: the 1740s mark the building of the Baroque castle, while the Renaissance fortress is an earlier landmark in the site's history. The castle also houses the “Kotvice” exhibition, which focuses on the surrounding natural environment. Guided tours cover the castle's history; restored halls can also be viewed. If you plan to take a tour, check the current dates in advance.
Nature trails and birdwatching
The Školní naučná stezka educational trail is about 1.5 km long, open year-round and has 12 stops. At Pasečný most, it connects to the Naučná stezka Kotvice nature trail. You can make the route and its stops a focus in their own right, or include the connection to the Kotvice trail in your plans.
At Kotvice Pond, a birdwatching station on the Kotvice nature trail stands above the water. Kotvice is also distinguished by a characteristic mosaic of species-rich ecosystems: these include ponds with nesting islands and shoreline vegetation, floodplain forests, oak-hornbeam forests with a higher proportion of deadwood, as well as flooded meadows, wetlands and pools. Natural and semi-natural plant communities, along with rare and specially protected plant and animal species, are found there. For nature enthusiasts, a particular highlight is the variety of habitats side by side—from aquatic and shoreline areas to forests and wet meadows.
Exploring by bike
The castle is located on the Beskydy Cycle Route, and bike racks are right by the castle. Cycling is another possible focus when planning your trip.
