Starý Jičín’s central square is a shared focal point for culture and cycling: the Church of St. Wenceslas stands there, with its converted Renaissance tower, and long-distance cycling route No. 5, “Jantarová stezka,” crosses the square. The Vesnické muzeum and Starojický kopec are also nearby; the latter is a prominent landscape feature, crowned by the remains of one of Moravia’s oldest noble castles. The area’s cultural history and cycling routes offer different considerations when choosing where to stay.
Town Centre and Cultural History
The square in the centre is also home to the municipal office, which includes the town hall, and an information centre. Together with the church, it is a clear landmark if you are interested in the town centre. As the information centre’s location may change, confirm it before your trip if needed.
The Vesnické muzeum is run by the Jiřinka social cooperative. A 2014 Czech Radio report describes numerous objects used by earlier generations; visitors could try out some of them for themselves. The exhibits described offer a different perspective on the town than the Renaissance tower, focusing on everyday objects and how they were once used. Before visiting, check which exhibits are currently on display and the opening arrangements.
Starojický kopec is a prominent feature of the landscape. The remains of one of Moravia’s oldest noble castles are associated with it. The castle ruins thus complement the architecture on the square and the museum’s everyday history with a perspective on the surrounding landscape.
Comparing Cycling Routes
The different routes can help you decide which one to take. Long-distance cycling route No. 5, “Jantarová stezka,” crosses the square. Route No. 502 starts in Starý Jičín and leads to Hukvaldy; route No. 503 runs from Starý Jičín to Krnov. This gives you three different reference points: the route through the town centre and two routes, each with a named destination. Consider whether the square or one of the named destinations is more relevant to your plans.
Route No. 503 also has information on difficulty and surface: it is easy, with some moderately difficult sections, and runs along class II and III roads as well as local and special-purpose roads. The surfaces are asphalt or paved, and the route is suitable for all types of bicycle. When planning, consider both the varying difficulty along the route and the type of road or path.
Conditions on the routes mentioned may change; this includes signage on route No. 5 and the classification and surface description of route No. 503. Check the latest information before setting off.
