Trojanovice combines a striking mountain landscape with Wallachian history. At 1,129 m, Radhošť is the highest and best-known peak in the municipality. For your planning, it is worth distinguishing between the locations: Pustevny can be reached from Trojanovice by cable car, while the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius stands on Radhošť. This lets you plan nature, regional architecture and history as separate points of focus.
Landscape and Nature Reserves
About 80% of the territory of Trojanovice has been part of the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area since 1973. The Radhošť National Nature Reserve lies on the mountain’s northern slope, at an elevation of 660 to 1,129 m, and covers 145 ha. It includes extensive forest stands characteristic of the summit areas of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. The Noříčí Nature Reserve also protects forest: its stony slopes and diverse, near-natural mix of tree species define its character; the trees are about 150 years old.
These figures describe different scales: the approximately 80% refers to the municipal territory, while 145 ha is the area of the Radhošť National Nature Reserve. This distinguishes the larger-scale inclusion in a protected landscape area from the area of an individual reserve.
Mountain Trails and Seasonal Planning
The statue of Radegast stands at 1,120 m, exactly halfway along the trail from Pustevny to Radhošť. A wide, blue-marked trail leads there from Pustevny. Cross-country ski trail 5A is a 16 km loop from Pustevny to Martiňák and back. Its availability and grooming depend on seasonal conditions; check these if you are planning to use the trail on a particular date. You should also check the cable car’s operating information before travelling, as details can change.
TIC Trojanovice plans its tourist routes with a starting point at the tourist information centre on Trojanovice village square. This provides a local reference point for planning your routes before choosing individual destinations.
Pilgrimages, Local History and Architecture
The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius on Radhošť was built between 1896 and 1898. It was consecrated and opened to the public on 11 September 1898. Pilgrimages in honour of Cyril and Methodius have been held on Radhošť since the 1960s, and are celebrated on 5 and 6 July; several thousand people take part. A festival celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit is held every year at the Lurdská Chapel in Horečky. Check the dates locally if you would like to plan your visit around the event.
Trojanovice developed from the beginning of the 16th century through the long-term colonisation of the area by shepherds and Pasekáři. During this period, local tales, stories and legends about Radhošť and the mythical figure Radegast emerged. The monument to the Strnadel brothers and Jan Knebl offers a brief overview of the history of Trojanovice and the way people lived in earlier times.
Two buildings on Pustevny tell the story of the area’s architectural history. The Libušín dining hall was built between 1897 and 1899. It is the work of architect Dušan Samo Jurkovič, who drew inspiration from traditional Wallachian log-house architecture. Maměnka is one of the folk-style wooden buildings that make up the Pustevny National Cultural Monument, and was also created by Dušan Jurkovič between 1897 and 1899. In Trojanovice, the Cupakdesign Gallery offers a different focus: it is a sales gallery for individually designed pieces of furniture at the boundary between sculpture and applied art. It also features sculptures, drawings and photographs by sculptor Pavel Cupák.
Traditional Cuisine in Trojanovice
Traditional soups include Zelňačka, also known as Kyselica. It is made with sauerkraut, potatoes and bacon or sausage; depending on the recipe, flour, milk, cream or Kyška can be used to thicken it. Lopaťáky, also known as Frgály, are also part of the local tradition: these are large, thin, round cakes filled with ingredients such as quark, pear butter, poppy seeds, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries. The ingredients and fillings offer a concrete glimpse into the regional food culture.
