From short circular walks between villages to a 48-kilometre high-altitude route, Haute-Corse offers two very different sides of hiking. In the Regional Natural Park, heritage trails reveal stone structures from everyday life; on Cap Corse, a route follows the Serra ridge and affords views over valleys and the sea. Romanesque chapels, medieval frescoes and museums also tell the story of Corsica from different perspectives.
Hiking: short heritage loops or a high-altitude route
The heritage trails in the Regional Natural Park are short, easy circular routes from village to village. Along the way, you’ll encounter dry-stone structures, ovens, fountains, washhouses and mills. Together, these buildings offer insights into building traditions and rural life.
Considerably longer is the 48-kilometre Crêtes du Cap Corse hiking trail, designed for experienced hikers. It follows the Serra ridge up to 1,322 metres and offers views over valleys and the sea from Bastia to Centuri. The route is planned to take at least three stages. The Communauté de Communes du Cap Corse maintains and marks the trail; check the trail markings and route stages locally, as conditions and access may change.
The coastal footpath through the Agriate also offers a long route: it runs for 35 kilometres from Saint-Florent to Ostriconi. The walk to Saleccia takes around five hours and 45 minutes. Walking times depend on conditions and access to the route. You can also reach the beaches of the Agriate by shuttle boats or water taxis from Saint-Florent; these trips depend on the season and weather.
Chapels, fortresses and museums
At Santa Maria della Chjappella, architecture and the walking experience come together. The Romanesque chapel dates from the late 11th century and has a rare double semicircular apse. It was listed as a historic monument in 1990. The walk along the Sentier Douanier takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
In Bastia’s old town stands the Palais des Gouverneurs, a 15th- and 16th-century fortress that now houses the Musée de Bastia. Its permanent exhibition presents seven centuries of the city’s history and the history of Corsica more broadly. The interpretation may evolve, while the core collection remains permanent. In Corte, the Musée de la Corse, a regional anthropology museum, explores traditional Corsican society, economy and culture; individual interpretations may evolve. The Citadelle de Corte is accessible only via the Musée de la Corse. Check visitor arrangements before your visit.
Smaller religious buildings also reveal different chapters of the island’s history. San Michele de Castirla is a pre-Romanesque chapel with frescoes from the late 15th century. In Brando, Santa Maria di E Neve features frescoes dated to 1386, considered the oldest known frescoes in Corsica.
Wine landscapes and route planning
Cap Corse is home to terraced vineyards that produce the AOC wines Muscat du Cap Corse and Coteaux du Cap Corse. In Balagne, AOC-Calvi wine production covers twelve wineries across 276 hectares between L’Île-Rousse and Calvi. The number of wineries and vineyard area may change. This lets you discover two named wine-growing areas, each with its own appellation.
The Balagne coastal tramway is another option for planning your routes: it runs between Calvi and L’Île-Rousse, stopping at beaches along the way. Services and timetables may change seasonally. Ports receiving ferries from mainland France include Bastia and L’Île-Rousse; routes and operators may change. Check current connections when planning your journey.
