Orneto combines church art, distinctive village architecture and trails to Fiuminale, an abandoned village in the heights of Velone-Orneto. When choosing excursions, it is worth distinguishing between the village’s character and the effort required to reach each destination: the Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul showcases historic architectural forms and an altarpiece; Ornetu is characterised by houses packed closely together around a small village square; Fiuminale is accessible only on foot or on horseback. This lets you choose whether to focus your stay on architectural history, the village landscape or hiking.
Church Art and Architectural Forms
The Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul in Velone may date from the first half of the 18th century. Its single-nave interior has a barrel vault articulated by lunettes; the apse is covered by a domical vault. A single-nave interior is the main space without side aisles. The barrel vault is a longitudinal vault articulated by lunettes; the domical vault covers the apse. The furnishings include a 19th-century altarpiece depicting the apparition of the Immaculate Conception to Saints Peter and Ursula. The church’s dating remains tentative, while the painting is attributed to the 19th century.
Village Character and Viewpoints
The village landscape can also be viewed at different scales. In Ornetu, the houses stand close together around a small village square. In Velone, the entrance gate invites pedestrians to discover beautiful viewpoints in the village. In the hamlet of Carbonaccia, there is a structure considered characteristic of Third Republic architecture. Ornetu is thus defined by the arrangement of several houses around the square, while Carbonaccia is characterised by a single architecturally distinctive structure.
Hiking Trails and Fiuminale
Hiking loop 19 crosses Velone-Orneto and lists the Chapelle San Ghjiseppu as a point of interest. A 17th-century mule track paved with Genoese stonework is also among the sights of Velone-Orneto. The chapel is included as a point of interest on the loop, while the mule track is notable for its historic paving and date.
Fiuminale is an abandoned village in the heights of Velone-Orneto. It is accessible only on foot or on horseback: via the trails from Fiuminale Suttanu, starting at the Pont de l'Enfer, or via Fiuminale Supranu from the hamlet of Ornetu. The marked, shaded trails take about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The two routes differ in their starting points: the Pont de l'Enfer on one side and the hamlet of Ornetu on the other. As access may vary by season, check local conditions before setting out.
Natural Features
Notable natural sites in Velone-Orneto include the Petrignani River. An old chestnut grove also remains there. Together, the river and grove add two distinct landscape features to the area’s churches and village architecture.
