The historic churches, two distinct artistic profiles and a marked themed route give you several specific points of focus when looking for accommodation in Oletta. You can explore the area through its architectural history and sacred art, contemporary art, or trails and landscape themes. The distinctions below can help you weigh your cultural and landscape interests for your stay.

Churches with distinct historical layers

At the Église Saint-André, an 18th-century building incorporates reused stones from an earlier structure: construction began in 1777, and green stones from the demolished building were reused. The church was designated a historic monument by decree on 19 March 1979. A 16th-century triptych is also associated with the Église Saint-André and was protected as a historic monument in 1956. The construction history and protection dates refer to different elements.

A much older landmark is the former Saint-François monastery, built in the late 12th or early 13th century. The chapel of the former monastery was listed as a historic monument by decree on 29 November 1974. The listing applies to the chapel; the date refers to when the former monastery was built. Together, these places reveal different historical layers, from the medieval monastery to the church building begun in 1777.

Two distinct artistic profiles

The Ange Leccia Center for Contemporary Art was founded in 2014 at Maison Conti in the heart of the village of Oletta. It focuses primarily on moving images and on producing and presenting international contemporary art. This focus is clearly distinct from sacred art and historic churches.

The Musée d’Art Sacré is located in the single-nave interior of the Santa Croce chapel. Stereoscopic image walls show monuments and churches in three-dimensional perspective; the museum also presents virtually 1,000 remarkable religious objects from Cap Corse, Nebbiu and Custera. These offer different approaches to art: international contemporary art based on moving images on the one hand, and sacred objects from three regions with their three-dimensional presentation on the other.

Marked trails and Lac de Padula

The “Voyage dans le temps” route covers 4 km of marked trails. Along the way, you can discover local fauna and flora, historic buildings, mills, fountains and the lanes of the village of Oletta. If you would like to explore nature and the area’s built heritage as part of a single theme, the route brings these interests together. Seasonal fire-safety restrictions may apply, so check in advance which rules are relevant to your visit.

Most of Lac de Padula lies within the municipality of Oletta; the reservoir is accessible on foot only. Before visiting, check locally for any restrictions in force. For planning purposes, the information answers different questions: the route’s length of marked trails is specified, while access is the key consideration for the reservoir.
