Solaro’s landscape stretches from long dune beaches to Punta di Tintennaghja. Its natural heritage includes more than 9,000 hectares of unspoiled landscape and a wide variety of flora and fauna. Hiking trails and historic sites also offer different ways to shape your stay: you can plan around a trail, nature or Solaro’s architectural and commemorative history.

Nature and Hiking Trails in Solaro

The A Strada Maestra hiking trail leads to Solaro and passes the remains of the San Ghjuvanni chapel and the square tower, a torra di Saraccini. The five-kilometre route runs from the hamlet of Tribbiu to the Listinchellu tract of land on the plain. Along the way, there are seven information panels and two viewpoints.

The Da u Pinu a u Piralzu circular hiking trail starts in the village of Solaro and is marked with yellow waymarks. It is described as an easy, two-hour walk with an elevation gain of 150 metres. Information panels provide details about birds of prey, and an orientation panel faces the mountains. As facilities like these may change or require maintenance, check their condition before setting out.

The Mare è Monti Livantinu hiking trail starts at the Pont de la Solenzara in the Kamiesch district of the municipality of Solaro. It is described as accessible year-round and presenting no particular difficulties. Weather, fire restrictions and local conditions may affect the walk; check these before setting out.

For other activities in Solaro, Acqua Natura offers high ropes courses, canyoning and paintball. Check the availability of these activities directly as part of your travel planning.

Churches, Tower and Memorial Sites

The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, also called San-Ghjuvanni-Battista, has a three-storey bell tower topped by a pyramidal finial. The former church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, also called San-Giovanni-Battista, is a Romanesque baptistery with a single nave and a semicircular apse. It preserves a circular baptismal font measuring 1.60 metres in diameter. The motifs and construction techniques identified in the remains indicate that the ancient baptistery of San Giovanni Battista dates from the late 10th to early 11th century.

Above an arrow slit, the watchtower Torra d'i Sarracini bears the year 1543. In the 16th century, it was used to raise the alarm during raids by the Barbary corsairs, known as the “Turchi”. Its design, date and historical function make the tower another point of reference for the history of the village.

The Solaro memorial stele commemorates the 50th anniversary of Corsica’s liberation and bears the dates 1943–1993. It depicts the Casabianca submarine surrounded by laurel. Another memorial site is the Marina de Solaro, considered an important site of Corsican resistance during the Second World War.

Solaro’s industrial history is also represented. The building known as Moulin de l'Agnarone appears as a grain mill on the Terrier map drawn up in 1795 and may date from the 18th century. The water channel that brought water from the Travo is still visible.

Tradition and Travel Planning

The village celebrates the feast of Saint Augustine on 28 August with a mass, procession, a large dance celebration and other events. If you would like to plan your trip around the feast, check the dates in advance, as the specific event arrangements are relevant to your planning.

The attractions therefore fall into distinct categories: the trails combine landscapes and hiking, each with its own route details, while the churches, tower, mill and memorial sites offer insights into different chapters of the village’s history. You can shape your visit to Solaro around the interests that matter most during your stay, and check the relevant conditions for individual activities or events in good time.
