Venaco lies at the foot of Monte Cardo in the Corsica Regional Natural Park. The protected Verghellu Valley is part of Venaco’s natural heritage and is characterized by diverse, endemic flora and fauna. The area also offers hiking trails with clearly identified locations, the Pont Eiffel over the Vecchio, and a regional cheese-making tradition. When choosing where to stay, you can consider nature, architectural history and local products as distinct areas of interest.

Landscape and hiking trails

Monte Cardo forms the landscape backdrop to Venaco; the protected Verghellu Valley is a more specific natural heritage site, with diverse, endemic flora and fauna. Thus, the mountain at the foot of the town and a valley with its own significance stand side by side. For nature enthusiasts, these offer two distinct points of reference: the location within the Corsica Regional Natural Park and the features of the protected valley.

For planning a hike, precise locations matter. The GR20 runs above the Verghellu Valley near the Petra Piana refuge in Venaco. The GR Mare Nord variant crosses Venaco from the Bella-Granajo Pass to the Pont de Noceta. Near Venaco, a hiking trail passes the Tragone mill and continues to the municipality of Noceta. The routes are described in different ways: the GR20 by its location in relation to the valley and refuge, the GR Mare Nord variant by its route between two named points, and the trail via Tragone by its destination, Noceta.

Pont Eiffel and the Tragone mill

The viaduct over the Vecchio, also known as Pont Eiffel, lies in Venaco and partly in Vivario. It was built between 1891 and 1893 and is attributed to Gustave Eiffel. Since 29 July 1976, the structure has been protected as a historic monument. The construction period, attribution and protected status are distinct historical reference points: 1891 to 1893 marks its construction, 29 July 1976 marks the start of its protection, and its connection to Gustave Eiffel remains an attribution.

Another architectural feature has been preserved at the Tragone mill: it still has three iron millstones bound with iron hoops. For the viaduct, the construction period and protected status provide the historical context; at the mill, the focus is on the surviving millstones. The historical features thus take different forms—as a dated, protected structure and as preserved equipment in a mill.

Cheese-making tradition and regional products

Regional products also offer a tangible insight into Venaco’s culinary heritage. U Venachese is one of five varieties of farmhouse cheese from the region. The recurring Fiera di u Casgiu showcases products by artisans and producers from Centre Corse and Corsica. These offer two distinct ways to explore the region’s food culture: a named farmhouse cheese and an event showcasing products from producers in the areas mentioned.
