Prunelli-di-Fiumorbo stretches from the mountains to the sea. To the north, the Fium’Orbu River forms the municipal boundary; to the south, the Abbatescu does. This brings together a variety of landscapes and cultural themes: Plage de Calzarellu, historic buildings and outdoor activities. Prunelli-di-Fiumorbo is one of the 143 municipalities in the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can provide a starting point for choosing your destination.
Sandy beach and coastal landscape
Plage de Calzarellu is a large sandy beach at the foot of the Calzarellu Tower. It stretches from the right bank of the Fium’Orbu River to the Étang de Gradugine and is lined with dense maquis scrub. The riverbank and lagoon mark the two ends of this stretch of coast, while the tower provides an additional architectural landmark.
Part of the former harbor quay at Calzarellu is also still visible at the foot of the tower. The beach and the surviving harbor structure offer different perspectives on this coastal spot: on one side, the sandy beach landscape; on the other, the remains of the former quay.
Facilities at Plage de Calzarellu include toilets, showers, an access path, a parking area and facilities for people with reduced mobility. Check which services are available seasonally before your trip.
Monastery, churches and archaeological remains
Below the village lies Couvent San Francescu, also known as the Capuchin monastery. Today it is a ruin; consolidation work has been carried out on its most damaged parts. The monastery was built in 1703 at Palestinu, at the initiative of Father François, who was born in Prunelli. The date and location of its foundation give the monastery a clearly defined place in history.
The site of San Ghjuvanni Evangelista is considered one of the earliest signs of the Christianization of Corsica. The present building dates to the late 4th or early 5th century. The site includes a church and the remains of a medieval settlement: early Christian architecture and traces of settlement from different periods are both part of the site today.
The Pievanie de la Cursa dates from the 10th or 11th century. Its remains preserve liturgical columns, a round baptismal font, a column capital and a door tympanum. The site offers more than a glimpse into its age: the baptismal font and columns point to its liturgical furnishings, while the capital and tympanum reveal architectural details. You can reach the ruins of the Cursa via the shortcut road from Prunelli, provided you have first obtained the landowner’s permission.
The church of Santa Maria in Prunelli also has its own architectural distinction: it is a fortified church in the classical style. Together with the monastery ruins, settlement remains and preserved parts of the Pievanie, it shows how varied the historical themes are at the sites mentioned here.
Hiking trail, heritage circuit and stargazing
The hiking trails in Prunelli include the historic Sentier des 7 fontaines. An official, self-guided 43-kilometer history and heritage circuit also starts in Prunelli di Fiumorbu. A named historic hiking trail and a circuit with a specified length offer different options if you would like to focus your stay on a hiking route or on history and heritage.
Corse Constellation in Acquacitosa, in Prunelli-di-Fiumorbo, offers something quite different. Its program includes astronomy lessons, introductory courses, interactive talks, discovery workshops and large-screen projections. It also offers stargazing with binoculars and telescopes, including solar observation. Events are also held under the title “Nights of the Stars.” Here, the focus is on astronomy and observation rather than architectural history or coastal scenery.
