At the northern boundary of the municipality of Olmi-Cappella, traces of medieval fortifications remain at the Château de San Colombano. This tangible connection leads into the area’s history, which can also be explored through its church architecture, former use as pastureland and cultural events.

Church and former pastoral farming

The Church of Saint Nicolas offers a different perspective on the area’s architectural history. Built in the late 16th century to a plan «all’antica», it is a Baroque building with architectural elements from the late Romanesque period. The date of construction, the plan and the stylistic elements describe different aspects of the building. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider these features side by side rather than assigning the church just one style label. This keeps the building’s date and architectural classification distinct as you explore the church.

The Bergeries d’I Stolli Vechji add a former summer pasture to the picture. This complex includes two shepherds’ huts, a cheese cellar, three enclosures and a milking pen. Its components point to different functions of a pasture site: shelter, cheese-making, enclosing livestock and milking. This makes the site different from the church and the traces of fortifications; it tells the story of the landscape’s former use. Access arrangements may change, so it is a good idea to check them before visiting.

Cultural history and summer programme

The Moresca offers another way into the area’s history. At this celebration, dancers and musicians depicted the battles between Moors and Christians in music. The tradition has been lost over time. It therefore describes a form of celebration from the past, while the Rencontres internationales de théâtre take place in summer. This difference in timing helps distinguish local cultural history from the seasonal programme.

Olmi-Cappella hosts the Rencontres internationales de théâtre in summer. The programme includes a week of public presentations. If you are interested in theatre, your travel dates therefore matter. Check the dates for the relevant year before settling on your stay, so you can plan your trip around the event.

Rando 20 in Ghjunsani

For a walk in the surrounding area, the Rando 20 route starts at the church in Olmi-Cappella and follows preserved paths around the villages of Ghjunsani. A short loop to the Torrent de la Tartagine is also possible. The route is open year-round and free to access. The church is therefore also a clearly identified starting point for the trail; the optional loop adds a separate option to the route. When planning, you can choose whether to follow the main route or include the additional loop.

The theatre programme and the route offer different points of reference when choosing when to travel: the Rencontres take place in summer, while Rando 20 is open year-round. If theatre is what matters most to you, check the dates for the year you plan to travel. The trail, by contrast, provides a reference point for your stay regardless of the season.
