Bisinchi is a mountain village in Castagniccia, at an altitude of 600 metres, overlooking the Golo Valley. It has a clear profile for planning a trip: circular routes for hiking or horse riding are complemented by chapels, churches and a religious tradition. The area’s history also has a specific point of reference: Ponte Novu, which Bisinchi overlooks, was the site of the famous Battle of Ponte Novu in 1769. For a stay, this means you can combine mountain scenery and local history, and plan your days around your own interests.

Circular Routes and Former Mule Tracks

The U Cavallu di Bisinchi association offers seven circular routes for hiking or horse riding, accessible to everyone. This gives trip planning a clear focus on outdoor activities and lets you choose between two ways of exploring the area. The network also includes the restoration of former mule tracks. Today’s circular routes thus sit alongside older paths, whose restoration is part of local trail work.

Incadenadu and Religious Buildings

The Incadenadu is a procession in Bisinchi. During the procession, an anonymous, hooded and barefoot penitent, bound in chains, carries a cross through the village’s narrow, torch-lit streets. Alongside the buildings, the procession is a distinct expression of religious tradition.

The church of Saint-Michel, also known as San Michele, has a double bell tower made of exposed stone at its rear. The history of sacred sites extends beyond this single building: in the 17th century, Bisinchi’s chapels and churches were collectively regarded as well-known holy places. The exposed masonry leaves the stones visible.

Santa Lucia is a small chapel in the hamlet of Fornu, below the village of Bisinchi. Sant’Ilario di Miletro is a chapel on the hillside below the present-day road. Santa Lucia is located in the hamlet of Fornu; the description of Sant’Ilario’s location is defined by its position on the hillside and below the road. In 2003, the walls of Sant’Ilario were stabilised and protected against water ingress.

The Stations of the Cross also form part of the village’s religious history: in Bisinchi, they were listed as a movable cultural object under protection on 9 February 1995. Alongside the churches and chapels, they are a distinct movable cultural object.

Historical Sites in the Surrounding Area

Archaeological remains from the Iron Age have been documented at Campu di Bonu, in the area of the former Rustinu. This reference adds an older historical perspective to that of Ponte Novu: the battle is dated to 1769, while Campu di Bonu points to the Iron Age. When planning a trip, you can therefore choose between different interests: the circular routes offer an activity focus, while religious traditions, sacred buildings and regional history provide other themes for your stay.
