A Petra Tafunata is a perforated stone through which the sun’s rays pass at the spring and autumn equinoxes, illuminating the 570-metre-high rocky summit on which the village was built. This light phenomenon connects a clearly defined moment in time with Speloncato’s rocky setting, giving the village a distinctive landmark in the landscape.

Lanes and views

Speloncato can be explored on foot through its narrow lanes. Tall houses typical of the village line them; some are built directly into the rock. This construction style makes the rock not just a backdrop but part of the village’s character. The spot known as A Cima offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscapes of Speloncato.

The Sentier du Patrimoine de Speloncato is also a point of reference for visitors interested in local heritage. It is in very good condition; check the conditions on site before setting out.

Churches and inherited history

San Michele is one of Speloncato’s two parish churches and dates back to the 15th century. The church contains religious artworks described as treasures of Corsican heritage. According to local tradition, San Michele in Speluncatu is said to have been built in a cave. Traces of this cave are visible in a side cupboard and from outside.

Santa Catalina is a former Pieve church dating back to the 11th century. Today, it houses the Sant Antone Abbate brotherhood. Its former ecclesiastical function and its present-day use by the brotherhood belong to different periods in its history.

The Saint-Philippe Chapel dates back to the 18th century and is located on the Giustignani heritage trail. Set on a rocky outcrop, it offers impressive views over the Reginu Valley. The chapel is located in a Natura 2000 zone where the red kite can be found. Check access before your visit.

Crafts and village traditions

Speloncato lies along the Route des Sens authentiques – A Strada di i Sensi. This discovery trail showcases local craftsmanship and distinctive products from the microregion. Alongside the churches and rocky landscapes, it also puts crafts and regional produce in the spotlight.

Another local feature is the “Cabane de Noël,” a distinctive expression of the Christmas fire tradition, considered a defining part of the village’s identity. The two features mark different times of year: the Petra Tafunata light phenomenon is tied to the spring and autumn equinoxes, while the Cabane de Noël is tied to the Christmas tradition.

Two mountain bike trails, different levels of difficulty

The Boucle du Reginu in Speloncato is a very easy mountain bike trail suitable for families. The Boucle de Tuani, by contrast, is difficult and intended for sporty riders. The two loops therefore differ clearly in difficulty and intended users. Check trail conditions before riding, as they may change.

Whether you are more interested in the narrow lanes, the churches and their history, or one of the two mountain bike trails, these verified local features offer different ways to explore Speloncato according to your interests.
