The San Michele Chapel overlooks the Ostriconi Valley and offers a viewpoint. Pietralba is also home to churches with distinctive architectural details, the ruins of the abandoned hamlet of Casenove, and a tasting at A Casana. This makes it possible to consider heritage, trails and food as distinct focuses for a stay.
Churches, building history and tradition
San Michele dates from the 11th or 12th century. Santa Maria Assunta is very likely pre-Romanesque. The church preserves two slit windows in its south wall and in the centre of the apse; various green schist sculptures can also be seen there. The two buildings offer different historical points of reference and architectural details.
The feast days are also associated with processions: during the feasts on 15 August, a statue of the Virgin Mary is carried. The Church of San Roccu dates from the 15th century and has three naves. Its statue is carried in procession on 16 August during the patron saint’s feast.
Another notable work of art is the painting “San Rocco Donatore Orante”, signed by Bernardo Strozzi. Pietralba’s restored vernacular heritage also includes the traditional oven U Fornu di a Piazza à l’Olmu. Its heritage therefore encompasses not only churches and works of art, but also a restored traditional oven.
Casenove and nearby trails
Casenove is an abandoned hamlet above Pietralba. Its remains include a golden Calvary, donated in 1870 by a hotelier from Versailles who was originally from Pietralba. The Boucle de Casenove starts in Pietralba and leads to the hamlet’s ruins. It is advisable to check local conditions before setting out for a walk.
Trail 17: Monte Astu also starts in Pietralba and offers panoramic views. The Boucle leads to a specific destination, the ruins of Casenove; for Trail 17, the panoramic views are the main attraction. You can base your choice on this difference without assuming that both trails offer the same kind of outing.
A Petralbinca’s 2026 events programme includes three trail routes and a mountain sports march in the hills around Pietralba and Casenove. This adds an event-related option to the individual trail choices, specifically for that programme year.
Tasting at A Casana
A Casana offers a visit to the farm by off-road vehicle, followed by a tasting. The farm’s animals are raised at an altitude of 900 metres above the village of Pietralba, in the heart of an oak and chestnut forest. The tasting includes cured meats and cheese served with a glass of red wine. The visit thus combines an insight into the farm with a specific culinary experience.
Planning your stay
If you are looking for a hotel in Pietralba, you can first consider what you would like to focus on: the buildings and processions, a trail linked to Casenove, or a visit with a tasting.
