Santa-Maria-Poggio offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: sacred architecture and historic buildings, as well as water and coastal attractions. Choosing a focus in advance can help you decide which places and activities best suit your travel plans.
Churches, Bridge and Historic Traces
The Église paroissiale de l’Assomption was built in the 17th century. Its single-nave layout is flanked by six side chapels. This design gives the church a distinct architectural character: alongside the nave, the chapels arranged on either side shape the impression of the interior.
The Pievanie of Santa Maria Poghju preserves older traces. The remains of an ancient three-nave Pieve church survive there. The monument is dated to around the year 1000, more precisely to the first quarter of the 11th century. The former Piebania di Moriani was significant in the history of Corsican early Romanesque architecture. Together, these buildings offer different historical perspectives—from the surviving church ruins to the architectural significance of a former Piebania.
Near the Pievanie, the Genoese bridge spans the Buccatoghju River. It was probably built in the 17th century according to a design used by engineers of the Republic of Genoa. Its dating is therefore not as certain as that of the Église paroissiale de l’Assomption, whose construction is dated to the 17th century. The building known as “Palazzu Reale” recalls King Théodore de Neuhoff’s stay of several days in the village of Poghju.
A local tradition also has a fixed date on the calendar: on May 12, the feast day of San Pancraziu, flowers are laid on two stones near the old chapel. Their impressions resemble a horseshoe and a footprint, respectively. If you would like to experience this custom, ask locally whether it is currently observed.
Water, Harbour and Coast
Ucelluline Waterfall lies on the Corniche road between the village of Poghju and the hamlet of Fano in the village of San Nicolao. Two tunnels carved into the rock signal the approach to the waterfall. The natural pools are used for swimming; the site also attracts people interested in canyoning and climbing. Conditions and safety requirements for these activities can vary, and local conditions at the pools may also differ.
Port de Taverna in the municipality of Santa Maria di u Poghju is a marina open year-round under a concession from the municipality. It has 450 berths and can accommodate boats up to 25 metres in length. These figures provide a useful guide but do not indicate whether berths are available. For specific harbour plans, it is advisable to check the latest information in advance.
Vanga di l’Oru is a rocky beach. Its rocky terrain distinguishes it from a sandy beach and is a useful point of reference when choosing coastal spots for your trip.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
If you are mainly interested in sacred architecture and historic building styles, you can make the cultural sites the focus of your plans. The waterfall, natural pools, harbour and rocky beach appeal to travellers who want to include water and coastal attractions. This lets you search for a hotel based on your interests without having to combine all the sights into a set route.
