Palasca can be explored through two distinct themes: the long architectural history of the medieval village and the landscape of the protected Agriate area, which includes the municipality. In the Ostriconi area, there is also a protected landscape, the beach at the river mouth and a coastal trail that can be walked. This gives your trip clear points of focus: the village ensemble and chapels on the one hand, and nature and trails around Ostriconi on the other.

Palasca’s Architectural History

The medieval village of Palasca dates from the end of the 11th century. It was built during the time of the Marquises of Massa, who had settled in San Colombanu. This gives the village’s history both a specific time period and a named ruling context. Visitors interested in historic places can connect the village’s early history with its individual buildings and their different dates of origin.

A Protected Architectural Ensemble and Its Details

The architectural complex includes the parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation (Santa-Maria-Assunta) and its bell tower, the adjoining covered passageway, the former town hall and the chapel of Sainte-Croix (Santa-Croce). Listing orders dated 6 April 2016 and 22 June 2017 protect the ensemble as a historic monument. The mix offers insight into Palasca’s local history: religious buildings and a former town hall are part of the same protected ensemble.

The Cappella di l’Annunziata was built in March 1713; a statue of the Virgin Mary can be seen above its entrance. The Cappella di San Bastianu was built in 1670. It contains a painting by Luigi Brunetti depicting Saint Lucy and Saint Sebastian at the feet of Our Lady of Sorrows. The chapels thus bring together specific building histories and a named subject in the artwork.

Some of Palasca’s formerly fortified houses, known as “e case torre,” still have machicolations today. The village’s architecture therefore includes not only the religious and former civic ensemble, but also surviving features of once-fortified houses.

Agriate and Ostriconi: Protected Landscape

The protected Agriate area includes the municipality of Palasca; the Ostriconi area within Agriate is also classified as a protected area. Ostriconi Beach lies at the mouth of the river of the same name, in a wild landscape far from any urban development. These geographical details help distinguish Agriate as the larger protected area and Ostriconi as a named area within it.

Walking at Ostriconi

From Ostriconi, you can walk the coastal trail through Agriate. The marked route of the Agriate coastal trail is described as having no particular difficulties; however, terrain and weather can affect conditions. Check the trail conditions before setting out. Ostriconi Beach can only be reached on foot via a path from the former main road. As access conditions may change, check the situation before your visit.
