In Ville-di-Pietrabugno, hiking and local history offer distinct areas of interest. The trails vary in duration: a ridge route of approximately four hours, a section of no more than one hour to the pass, and a cultural trail through several hamlets. Other specific points of interest in the area's history include the Church of Sainte-Lucie, Guaitella and the Glacière dite Nivera Nuova. When planning, two questions can therefore help: How much time would you like to spend walking, and are you more interested in the landscape or the cultural heritage?
Hiking trails with different durations
The “NIVERE” hiking trail starts either in Alzetu or Guaitella, leads to the ridges and continues to Farinole. The ridge section takes approximately four hours. This estimate helps you classify the hike as a longer outing and distinguish it from a shorter section of trail. Check current access and local conditions for the NIVERE trail.
The “E nivere à cardo” hike highlights a different aspect of the landscape: it offers an impressive panoramic view of the Tuscan Archipelago. If you are primarily looking for a wide-ranging view when choosing a hike, you can consider this tour for its scenery alongside the ridge route, whose duration is specified.
The “Randonnée autour du village” hike starts in the hamlet of Guaitella and takes no more than an hour to reach the pass. From there, you can continue along a fully marked route to the hamlet of Alzetu. The time estimate refers to the section up to the pass, not the continuation. Check trail conditions and signposting locally before setting out, especially if you plan to continue to Alzetu.
The “I chjassi di a memoria” cultural trail passes through several hamlets in Ville-di-Pietrabugno and can be explored on foot. It offers another way to include hiking in your travel plans: the connection between the hamlets is the focus here, while the other trails mentioned are defined by their ridge route, panorama or the time it takes to reach the pass.
Churches, hamlets and traces of the past
The Church of Sainte-Lucie was built in 1796 over the remains of a sanctuary dating from 1562. It is dedicated to Saint Lucy and Saint Felicity. Its Baroque architecture is complemented by paintings by Old Masters and reliquaries from the modern era. The two dates mark distinct historical layers: the older place of worship and the church building of the late 18th century. Together with its furnishings, they offer a tangible insight into the area's architectural and religious history.
Another historical trace is the Glacière dite Nivera Nuova in Ville-di-Pietrabugno. Its earliest mentions in the archives date back to the first half of the 17th century. The facility was used to produce ice and supplied, among others, families from Bastia's upper class as well as the city's café owners. Since January 9, 2018, it has been listed as a historic monument. This site therefore brings together a long history of documented use and a clearly dated monument status.
Guaitella is one of the hamlets of Ville-di-Pietrabugno and is known for its medieval houses and historic village centers. This gives the hamlet significance in its own right alongside the hiking trails: its streetscape and history are as much a part of the local story as the surrounding routes. A Festa Paisana is also associated with Guaitella. The festival was established in 2012; at its 13th edition in July 2026, local produce, wines, craft-brewed beers and food were offered at stalls. If attending a festival is important to your trip, check the dates for your preferred travel period.
