A climb up 111 steps, a view over the Sázava Valley and a museum with historic clocks: Ledeč Castle brings together several facets of the region’s cultural heritage in one place. Elsewhere, glassmaking, literature or a protected river landscape take centre stage. This means you can choose hotels to suit your interests without turning the different sights into a fixed itinerary.
Landscape and Nature in the Havlíčkobrodsko Region
Havlíčkobrodsko is one of Vysočina Tourism’s five destination areas. Its landscape is characterised by wooded hills and romantic, rocky valleys. Here, the Železné hory extend into the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. At 709 metres, Melechov is the highest point in Havlíčkobrodsko. These details convey the region at different scales: from its expansive landscape to a single prominent peak.
The Údolí Doubravy Nature Reserve is a distinctive natural highlight. More than 80 species of vertebrates live there. This number gives a sense of the area’s wildlife diversity without singling out individual species. If you want to include nature in your travel plans alongside castles and museums, you’ll find a different focus here from the historic collections in the towns and castles.
Castles, History and Crafts
Ledeč Castle stands on a limestone promontory above the Sázava River. After 111 steps, its 32-metre-high tower offers views over the Sázava Valley. The castle also houses the Municipal Museum, with exhibitions on the town’s history and local crafts. These include pottery, glassmaking, weaving and dyeing; a permanent exhibition is devoted to historic clocks. A visit thus combines views from the tower with a wide range of topics related to local history and crafts.
Lipnice Castle was founded around 1310 and is associated with the writer Jaroslav Hašek. Visitor highlights include an archaeological exhibition and extensive cellars. The former banqueting hall of Jindřich z Lipé is located in the cellars. Lipnice thus offers a different perspective on castle history from the museum in Ledeč: here, the focus is on archaeological insights, historic cellars and the connection to Hašek.
Lipnice also explores the literary theme. The Lipnický Poesiomat near Hašek’s grave presents material about Hašek and Wolker, as well as legends of the castle. Those interested in this aspect can consider it alongside the castle and its history. The different features are not interchangeable: the exhibition, cellars and Poesiomat each offer their own perspective.
Huť Jakub Tasice began operating in Tasice in 1796. The complex preserves an exceptionally well-preserved open-air museum of glassmaking and has been a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 2014. This makes Tasice a special destination for learning about the history of glassmaking. Unlike the castles, the focus here is not on power, collections or literature, but on a place associated with glassmaking.
Town History and Regional Food and Drink
Havlíčkův Brod also brings the town’s history to life: its tourist information centre has an interactive historical exhibition. A town model shows how the town developed and highlights important sights. This offers a different kind of cultural overview from Lipnice Castle or the museum in Ledeč, focusing instead on a model and the development of the urban landscape.
Rebel, the traditional beer from Havlíčkův Brod, is one of the region’s culinary highlights. It is served with seasonal and regional specialities. Together with the exhibitions on local crafts, glassmaking in Tasice and the castles, it gives a varied picture of the region’s cultural and culinary offerings.
