The well-preserved remains of Hrádek u Podmok lie on a rocky spur above a stream. The area also has three larger ponds, a marked hiking trail and a family farm with Huacaya alpacas. Podmoky lies near Golčův Jeníkov in gently rolling countryside on the border between the Vysočina Region and the Central Bohemian Region. You can choose from several themes for your stay: local history, landscapes, hiking or encounters with animals.

Ponds and Watercourses

The cadastral area of Podmoky includes the larger ponds Starý, Nový and Rousínov. Two are suitable for swimming; check their seasonal suitability locally. The Brslenka also flows through Podmoky. It is formed by the upper reaches of the Čáslavka and the Hluboký potok and flows into the Doubrava. This makes it possible to distinguish the ponds and the stream as different features of the local water landscape.

RousĂnov Pond is privately owned and lies by a mill. There are cabins on its dam where summer camps are held; the organisation of the camps may vary. This local feature should be distinguished from the three ponds as landscape features: RousĂnov is also associated with a specific use.

History and Buildings

Hrádek u Podmok preserves the well-maintained remains of a small castle on a rocky spur above a stream. The castle is dated to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The first written mention of Podmoky dates from 1360, when the place was named in historical sources as part of the Golčův Jeníkov estate. The castle’s date and the written mention of the place thus represent two different historical reference points.

Buildings from later centuries also shape local history. The Church of St Mary in Podmoky was built in 1908 and renovated in 1981. A brick bell tower has stood in its original location since 1835. For the church, the dates of construction and renovation are recorded, while the bell tower’s construction, date of origin and original location are all noted.

Hiking and Animal Encounters

A marked hiking trail passes through Podmoky: it leads from Golčův Jeníkov–město railway station towards Tisí skála and continues to Horky railway station. Check the signs and trail conditions locally before setting out. The route is described by its named stops and its course through Podmoky.

At the U HajdĂşchĹŻ family farm, visitors can get to know and pet Huacaya alpacas up close. The visitor enclosures are also home to goats, Kunekune pigs, Belgian Giant rabbits, and waterfowl and chickens. A visit to the farm offers a different focus from the hike: here, it is all about encountering animals. The farm also produces and sells honey from its own hives.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

You can reach Podmoky by car from the I/38 main road. If you are driving from the direction of Čáslav, turn right at the start of the Golčův Jeníkov bypass; from there, it is about 2.5 kilometres to Podmoky on a local road. First consider whether local history, a hike or a visit to the family farm will be the main focus of your stay.
