The Church of St. Margaret is central to Loukov’s cultural identity: it was first documented in 1352 and stands on the site of the vanished village of Loukov. There are also medieval wall paintings and two cycling routes that lead to the church. When planning your trip, it is worth noting the different character of these themes: church art and history sit alongside a relatively easy, road-focused route and a considerably more challenging one.
St. Margaret and its medieval context
The first documentary mention of St. Margaret dates to 1352. This marks the earliest written record, not necessarily the date the church was built. The three Podlipnice churches—St. Martin in Dolní Město, St. George in Řečice and St. Margaret in Loukov—date from the 14th century. They are especially known for the large number of medieval wall paintings that have been preserved. St. Margaret can therefore be understood both through its specific early written record and as part of this group of churches.
The church stands on the site of the now-vanished village of Loukov. In addition, “Loukov – Church of St. Margaret” is designated as an archaeological site. The historic location and the site designation give the place two distinct points of historical interest that go beyond the age of the church itself.
Two cycling routes with different levels of difficulty
The “In the Footsteps of Gothic Art” cycling route leads to the Church of St. Margaret. It is considered relatively easy and runs mostly on roads. Its described features include long, gradual descents and scenic views across the landscape. The church is therefore a clearly identified stop on a route whose roads and views also shape the cycling experience.
The “Melechov and Podlipnicko” route is quite different: it is 37.9 kilometres long, has 608 metres of ascent and is rated highly difficult. Its course combines roads with field and forest tracks, gravel sections and trails. At the edge of the forest, it leads to the old Gothic Church of St. Margaret, a reminder of the vanished community of Loukov. Compared with the predominantly road-based “In the Footsteps of Gothic Art” route, distance, ascent and changing surfaces are also important factors to consider when planning this ride.
Route conditions and maps may change; surface information can also be affected by maintenance or detours. Check the route and conditions before setting out, especially for “Melechov and Podlipnicko.”
Landscape in Melechov Nature Park
Melechov Nature Park is also part of Loukov’s regional setting: Loukov’s cadastral area lies within the park, which was established in 1995. Its conservation aims include the characteristic landscape of Vysočina, significant landscape features and ecologically stabilising structures. The nature park covers 32 square kilometres around Melechov, including Stvořidla; it also protects landscape and natural values, as well as several protected plant and animal species. Nature and landscape conservation thus offer another perspective on the region, alongside its churches. The area figure refers to the park as a whole, not to Loukov alone.
Choose your holiday apartment and travel focus
If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Loukov, first decide what you want to focus on: would you like to explore St. Margaret and its history, or include cycling in your plans? The two routes differ considerably in difficulty, surface and length. When comparing specific listings, check that the stated location and amenities meet your needs.
