The municipal chapel in Ovesná Lhota was built in 1938 and consecrated on 24 July. The village’s history also features crosses commemorating different events, a war memorial and two hiking routes from 2016. This gives visitors several ways to explore the area when planning a trip: you can focus on local history or make the documented routes your main interest. You can decide which matters most before looking for accommodation; given their date, the route descriptions should be treated as historical guidance.
Location and landscape
Ovesná Lhota lies on a plateau in the Českomoravská vrchovina, near Světlá nad Sázavou. The location has two aspects: the plateau describes the surrounding landscape, while Světlá nad Sázavou is the nearby town mentioned here. This offers two different perspectives when choosing a destination: the plateau provides the scenic setting, while the chapel, crosses and war memorial invite visitors to explore the village’s cultural history. When choosing a trip, consider whether you would rather focus on the landscape, local history or the historic hiking routes. These interests can help you decide whether the destination is right for you.
Chapel, crosses and war memorial
The municipal chapel was built in 1938 and consecrated on 24 July by František Štulpa from Smrdov. The year it was built and the date of its consecration mark two separate milestones in its history; the consecration is associated with a specific person and the place of Smrdov. The Ovesná Lhota war memorial was unveiled on 12 May 1946. It stands in the centre of the village near the chapel, providing a specific landmark for finding your way around.
The crosses commemorate different things: U Božích muk remembers the soldiers who fell in the Hussite Wars, while the cross in front of the school commemorates the abolition of the robot (forced labour) obligation. Two lime trees were planted beside the school cross in 1910; four lime trees were planted around the soldiers’ mass grave in 1919. These mark different themes and dates: remembrance of war, the abolition of an obligation, and plantings recorded at two locations.
Historic hiking routes
The two hiking routes differ in the landmarks described. In 2016, “Po stopách Josefa Toufara” passed through Ovesná Lhota, then followed a field track towards Kynice and went through the forest below Borovina. Also in 2016, the 11-kilometre “Cestou necestou” route passed through Ovesná Lhota and continued to Sázavka railway station. The first route is described as following a field track and then a forest path towards Kynice and Borovina; the second gives a distance and a destination. Both routes date from 2016; check current trail conditions before setting out.
