Olešenka has several distinct facets: the rectangular village square with its ponds shapes the townscape, the area’s history is linked to regional mining, and Strážky offers a landscape perspective. When planning your trip, this distinction can help you decide whether to focus on cultural connections or the landscape. The features range from the specific square and chapel to the views, water management and planned projects in the landscape.
Village Square and Chapel
Several ponds divide Olešenka’s rectangular village square. The bodies of water shape the layout of the square and make its spatial design a distinctive feature of the townscape. Here, the focus is not on a single building, but on the shape of the village square.
Olešenka has a chapel with a bell tower and sculptures from the 18th century. The tower and sculptures provide different points of interest: the bell tower is a feature of the building’s design, while the date of the sculptures places them in their historical context.
Mining History and Forest Use
The founding of Olešenka was connected with the heyday of mining in the region. Charcoal for silver smelters was also produced in the forests of Olešenka. These two details relate to different scales: mining forms part of the regional background to the settlement’s founding, while charcoal production refers to a specific activity in the local forests. This adds the economic use of the landscape to the history of the settlement and its buildings.
Landscape and Water
The approximately 604-metre-high hill of Strážky offers expansive views. This adds a landscape perspective to the smaller-scale features of the village square.
Four retention basins in the Olešenka landscape slow water runoff and encourage infiltration. Unlike the ponds by the village square, their function relates to water management in the landscape, not to the layout of the townscape.
Planned Projects in the Landscape
The planned VN1 water retention facility is located in the Olešenka cadastral area, in a natural valley channel by the Olešenský potok, and is part of a planned land adjustment project. The valley channel and stream specify its location in the landscape, while the four retention basins are characterized by their role in runoff and infiltration. This is a useful distinction when considering the landscape: one is a locally situated planned project, the other the function of several basins.
The HC3 field path connection is also planned. Its route follows that of a vanished historic path and is intended to connect Olešenka with Ronov nad Sázavou. The path therefore relates both to a historic trace and to a planned connection between the two places.
