Skála lies in a valley below a rocky outcrop on the Perlový potok. The village combines this distinctive setting with a clear cultural focus: the Baroque church of “Nanebevzetí Panny Marie” and the historic traces in its surroundings. On a trip to Vez-Skala, the village’s architectural history and religious tradition can be explored as separate areas of interest.

The Valley Landscape and Local Nature

Another clearly identifiable landmark is a 30-metre-high chimney at a distillery. Storks have regularly nested there since 1954. This observation adds a distinct connection to nature to the church’s architectural history and is tied to a specific location. Those interested in local wildlife will find another topic that makes Skála special, alongside its architecture and local history.

The Baroque Church and Its Furnishings

The present-day Baroque church was built in 1728 to replace an earlier wooden chapel. Its exterior is rectangular, while the nave is oval inside, with niches along the transverse and diagonal axes. A rectangular exterior outline thus meets an oval interior space. A tower with bevelled corners stands in front of the west façade, and the year 1728 is displayed above the façade. The church has been protected as a historic monument since 1958.

The furnishings also reflect several historical periods. The Baroque main altar dates from around 1740 and features twisted columns and four statues of angels venerating the Virgin Mary. The church also has a Rococo pulpit. The Stations of the Cross by J. Vysekal date from 1883. Together with the church’s construction date, these details reveal different phases in its architectural and furnishing history: from its construction to the altar dating from around 1740 and the Stations of the Cross from the late 19th century.

Historic Traces Around the Church

A stone staircase was built in front of the church in 1864. Below the church, a monument on the hillside commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War; it was unveiled on 9 June 1930. Behind the church is a former cemetery. At its far end stands a mortuary aligned with the church. The staircase, monument and former cemetery differ not only in their histories but also in their locations relative to the church. The rectory in Skála dates from 1787, adding another construction date to the history of the village.

Plan Your Pilgrimage and Church Service

A pilgrimage takes place at the church each year on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. For the weekly schedule, the diocesan plan, updated on 20 March 2026, lists a Sunday Mass at 10:30 a.m. These are two different planning points: an annual feast day and a specific weekly service time. Check the current Mass schedule with the parish contacts before travelling.
