The historic Liběcká obchodní stezka trade route ran through Jeřišno; at the same time, the village lies within the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area (CHKO). Here, a specific local connection to trade history meets the landscape of the region. The village’s architectural history includes the Church of St. Wenceslas (Kostel sv. Václava), with its Gothic core and later Baroque alterations. If you are looking for accommodation in Jeřišno, you can consider whether nature trails or cultural history should be the focus of your stay.

Landscape and trails

The landscape of the Železné hory is characterized by forests, meadows, ponds, fields, and small settlements. Numerous cycling routes and marked hiking trails provide access to this regional setting. This offers a different perspective from looking at individual historic buildings: cycling and hiking tours bring the landscape to the fore, while the church and historic sites draw attention to architecture and the past. Check the individual routes and their conditions before setting out. This allows you to balance the natural and cultural aspects of your stay according to your interests, without combining them into a fixed itinerary.

The Church of St. Wenceslas (Kostel sv. Václava)

The Church of St. Wenceslas (Kostel sv. Václava) stands on a hill in the center of Jeřišno. It is located on a former cemetery that was surrounded by a stone wall. The church has been documented in records since 1350. Its core is Gothic; the building was later extended and remodeled in the Baroque style. Its history thus brings together a Gothic core and later structural changes. Along with its hilltop location and the former cemetery, these provide several points of reference for understanding the history of the building.

The Liběcká obchodní stezka trade route is also part of Jeřišno’s history: it ran through the village. This historic trade route complements the church’s architectural history with a different local connection. These two distinct themes offer a cultural-history focus: the development of a religious building and a trade connection that passed through Jeřišno.

Historical traces in Heřmaň

Heřmaň has a surviving memorial to the victims of the First World War. Above Heřmaň, on a hill, the outline of the foundations of a wooden fortress that once stood there can still be made out. Different forms of historical remembrance meet here: a surviving memorial and a former fortification that is now visible only in the outline of its foundations.

A settlement known as “Ves Zerussna” was first mentioned in 1406 in connection with the Vilémov Monastery and Přibík ze Sázavy. Its location at the time was placed only approximately somewhere above Heřmaň. This early mention and the discernible outline of the fortress foundations offer different historical points of reference from the surviving memorial or the church’s architectural history: one concerns a settlement whose location is only approximately known, while the other involves visible structural traces.

The rectory in Heřmaň is currently used as a gallery. If you would like to include the gallery in your stay, check in advance whether it is open.
