Věž combines a cultural and historical profile with a castle park that is open to the public for recreation. The castle, the chapel in the town centre and the building history of the Chapel of Christ the King, which is connected with the castle’s former owners, offer different perspectives on the town’s history. When planning a stay, architecture, historical context and the use of the park can thus be considered separately.
Castle and Park: Building History and Recreational Space
Věž Castle was built as a Baroque manor house at the end of the 17th century; its construction is thought to date to around 1700. The main façade is designed in the Classicist style: a triangular pediment and three-axis projecting wings with balconies divide the front. The site can therefore be viewed from two distinct perspectives: its historical origins and the specific design of its façade. The castle remains protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its significance thus encompasses both its building history and its continuing protected status.
The castle park includes a greenhouse and a barn. The park was revitalised in 2014 and is used by the public for recreation. The information distinguishes the site’s built features from how it is used: the greenhouse and barn are part of the park, while its revitalisation and recreational function shape its role as a place to spend time. For trip planning, this public recreational space complements the castle’s cultural and historical perspective.
Chapels and Their Historical Context
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, which houses a fire brigade equipment depot, stands in the centre of Věž, adjoining the castle park to the north. It was built in 1730; the year 1893 is also inscribed on its façade. The construction date and the inscription refer to different things and should not be conflated into a single building date.
Another building history leads to the Chapel of Christ the King. It was built in the second half of the 1920s by the then owners of Věž Castle, the Stangler family. Its design imitates the Early Gothic style. Beneath the chapel is a crypt in which members of the Stangler family were buried. The history of the former owners is thus linked to the building and the crypt, while the stylistic classification describes the chapel’s architectural language.
Dates and Elevation
Věž lies at an average elevation of 550 to 560 metres. Its lowest point is in the floodplain of the Perlový potok stream, at 465 metres. The average elevation and the specifically identified lowest point add two distinct geographical measures to the building history. The historical dates can also be distinguished by what they refer to: around 1700 is the estimated date of the castle’s construction, 1730 marks the construction of the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, and 1893 appears as a date on its façade. The Chapel of Christ the King dates to the second half of the 1920s. These details refer to different buildings and building elements and do not constitute a single construction phase.
