For cyclists, Dolní Sokolovec can be linked to a specific 50 km route that passes through the village. Other features include rock formations in the Doubrava Valley, a viewpoint in the surrounding area, and the protected natural monument Písník u Sokolovce. These features do not automatically fit into the same outing: the cycling route is challenging, while Písník is not open to the public. So if you are looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide on the focus of your trip first.
Cycling route and getting there
The Chotěboř–Havlíčkova Borová–Krucemburk–Podmoklany–Chotěboř route runs mostly on roads, is challenging, and is designed for trekking bikes. It passes through Dolní Sokolovec and is 50 km long in total. This distance refers to the entire route, not just the section through the village. When planning, you can therefore decide whether you want to ride the whole route or just part of it.
Dolní Sokolovec can also be reached by bus from Chotěboř or Libice nad Doubravou. Plan your journey according to the timetable for your travel date.
Rock formations and natural monument
The Doubrava flows through the valley for approximately 5 km. The named rock formations include Doubravský pilíř and Mikšova skála, each more than 15 m high. One of the best-known and most visited formations is Čertův stolek; its summit offers a view. The river, the rock formations, and the viewpoint are distinct aspects of the landscape, giving your trip more than one possible focus.
The rock formations in the Doubrava Valley are mainly visited by climbers. Members of the Czech Mountaineering Club are permitted to climb selected rock formations in the Údolí Doubravy Nature Reserve. If climbing is part of your plans, take note of both the selection of permitted formations and the membership requirement.
In the vicinity of Dolní Sokolovec, a tourist viewpoint lies between Bílek and Libická Lhotka in a picturesque valley of the Doubrava. It is located on the site of the medieval watchtower Sokolovec, also known as Sokolohrad. The viewpoint therefore has its own historical connection. However, the nearby river and viewpoint should not be confused with Písník, which is closed to the public.
Písník u Sokolovce is a protected natural monument covering an area of 0.411 ha. It preserves a partly flooded former sand pit where round-leaved sundew is abundant; it also serves as a breeding refuge for amphibians. Under its founding provisions, the area is not open to the public. So do not plan to visit Písník. The access restriction applies to this natural monument.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans
Your focus and how you plan to get there are the main considerations when choosing a holiday apartment. For a cycling trip, take into account the challenging nature of the full route and its suitability for trekking bikes; if travelling by bus, Chotěboř and Libice nad Doubravou are possible starting points. If you are interested in the landscape and the view, you can plan to visit the tourist viewpoint as a separate activity, but keep it distinct from Písník because of its access restrictions.
