A long valley, a distinctive orchard avenue and a family-run mill offer different ways to explore Oudolen. There is also a memorial chapel, historic route connections and traditional events. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether cultural history, walks or a visit to the mill should be the deciding factor.
Valley and orchard avenue
Oudolen lies in a long valley of the Oudoleňský potok, also known as the Oudoleňka. One notable feature of the landscape is the Oudoleňská ovocná alej ke křížku. It runs along a restored 500-metre-long path. Forty apple trees, 30 pear trees, 30 cherry trees and 20 plum trees were planted there. The avenue provides a habitat for animals and a food source for bees. In the 2019 Avenue of the Year competition, it was chosen as the winner for the Vysočina Region.
Hraběnčin křížek is also a destination for walks: the path leading to it is intended as a walking route. The cross was already marked on a map of the Polná estate from 1780, along the road from Oudolen to Jitkov. In 2019, the municipality restored it and installed a place to sit and an information board there. The avenue and the cross offer different points of interest if you would like to focus on the landscape and local history.
Chapel and historic traces
The chapel in Oudolen was built in 1926 in memory of the soldiers who fell in the First World War from 1914 to 1918. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and its tower houses a bronze bell. The cross, already marked on a map in 1780, and the later memorial chapel represent different historical time markers. Oudolen is also mentioned in old documents in connection with a branch of the Liběcká Trail.
Family-run mill and local traditions
Mlýn Oudoleň produces and sells rye, wheat and spelt flour. At the Kryštofek family mill, rye flour is ground using original machinery built during the Second World War. The mill invites visitors to come in person and see the small family-run mill. If you are planning a visit or a flour purchase, check the visiting and sales arrangements before your trip.
Traditional events in Oudolen include a Shrovetide parade and a Christmas market. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with one of these events, check the event dates before your trip.
Getting there and the regional setting
Class III road 3509 runs through Oudoleň. Bus services connect it with Havlíčkův Brod, Přibyslav and Chotěboř. If travelling by bus, check the current timetable in advance. Oudolen is also a member of the Společenství obcí Podoubraví municipal association. The association’s area has numerous marked cycling and hiking trails, providing an additional regional setting for planning your trip.
