Světlá nad Sázavou brings together a landscaped park, historic buildings and insights into local craft traditions. This offers several starting points for planning your trip: you can explore the history of the park and its architecture, learn about the town’s history, or plan a factory visit or a cycling route.
A park landscape with romantic buildings
Světelský Park covers about 16 hectares. It was probably created in 1871 by Count František Josef Salm-Reifferscheidt, as part of extensive construction and renovation work. Its romantic buildings and features include pavilions, stone staircases, Čertův most, an alpine garden and ponds with water lilies. The park’s individual features showcase different aspects of its design: in addition to buildings and staircases, they include landscaped planting areas and bodies of water.
The town maintains the park for visitors from the town and the surrounding area, both near and far. This makes the park a destination in its own right, alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions. The park’s romantic buildings and features bring its historic landscape design to life for you.
The castle, church and town history
The castle first opened its doors to the general public in 2014. The Muzeum Světelska has been located in the eastern Baroque wing since the summer of 2007. It documents the history of the town, the castle, the noble families and the surrounding area. The exhibition presents glassmaking and stonemasonry as two of the most important occupations of the local population. The museum thus connects the history of the town and castle with aspects of local working life.
The Church of St. Wenceslas has a much earlier written mention: it appears in a charter dated July 13, 1318, issued by its patron, Jaroslav II, Abbot of Vilémov. At that time, the church was a single-nave, early Gothic building in the shape of a cross. The date and description of its architectural form provide two specific historical reference points. Together with the museum’s subjects, they create a nuanced picture: a medieval reference, the history of a castle, and the documented development of the town and its surroundings sit side by side.
Factory visits by appointment
Bohemia Machine offers factory visits on weekdays from January to December, but only by prior arrangement. Tours in English, German or French are also available by prior arrangement. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to arrange your visit in advance and choose a weekday. You can also ask about your preferred language. This insight into glassmaking differs from the historical subjects: it requires a scheduled appointment.
A cycling route as an option for your itinerary
The Světlá nad Sázavou–Ledeč nad Sázavou cycle path is part of the regional Posázavská Cycle Route No. 19 and is intended to be more than 12 kilometres long. If you want to include cycling in your trip, you can consider the route as a separate option for your itinerary. It offers a different focus from the cultural attractions: while the park, castle, church and museum centre on landscape and history, the cycling route is about the journey itself. Choose your focus depending on whether you would rather explore these historical subjects, arrange an appointment for a factory visit or include the cycling route.
