Vlkanov offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: a marked cycling route runs through the municipality, the village’s history dates back to 1591, and the surrounding area includes the Stvořidla river landscape and Číhošť, with its stone monument marking the geographical centre of the Czech Republic. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a trip to Vlkanov, you can focus on cycling, nature by the river, or local history.

Cycling and getting your bearings

Vlkanov lies at the junction of Road III/34731, between Číhošť and Světlá nad Sázavou, and Road III/34734, between Vlkanov and Sázavka. A marked cycling route runs through the area along both third-class roads. On the Posázavskou cestou cycling route, Vlkanov is the last village before the route descends towards Ledeč nad Sázavou. The road numbers place the village in relation to the connections mentioned, while Posázavskou cestou also provides a clear sequence along the route towards Ledeč. These offer different ways to orient yourself when planning a cycling trip: one describes the location at the junction of two roads, the other Vlkanov’s position before the descent.

River landscape and places to visit nearby

A focus for nature and outdoor activities lies by the Sázava River nearby: the Stvořidla Nature Reserve is located between Světlá nad Sázavou and Ledeč nad Sázavou. The protected section includes a fast-flowing stretch of river, a stony riverbed, and a breakthrough valley shaped by geomorphological processes; it is also a popular destination for canoeists. Here, the river and landscape shape the choice of activities, while the cycling route offers another way to explore the area. River conditions and access may change seasonally. If you are considering a paddling trip, check both before your planned visit.

Another nearby place is Číhošť, two kilometres west of Vlkanov. A stone monument there, bearing a map of the country, marks the geographical centre of the Czech Republic. Unlike Stvořidla, the focus here is a geographical reference point and its stone marker. The surrounding area thus offers different points of interest: a protected river landscape associated with paddling, and a specifically marked centre point.

Local history and landscape

Vlkanov’s history dates back to 1591. A school was built in the village in 1830. It initially had one class and was later expanded to two; there was also a third branch school in Opatovice. Josef Zadina was born in Vlkanov in 1887. In 1919, residents erected a monument on the village green to commemorate five fellow citizens who fell in the First World War. In the 1930s, Zadina was a member of parliament and a minister of Czechoslovakia. These historical points of interest range from the school’s history and the village’s memorial to the political career of a man born in Vlkanov.

There is also a named natural feature within the municipality: Louka u Vlkanova is in the northeastern part of the area and is listed as a valuable landscape feature, VKP No. 74. The presence of Pedicularis sylvatica is also recorded at Louka u Vlkanova. Nature-related points of interest thus range from a part of the landscape within the municipality to the Sázava river landscape nearby.
