Lány lies at the foot of the Železné hory; the area has a varied relief. The entire municipal area is part of the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area. When classifying the natural area, you can distinguish between the larger-scale designation and the finer zoning: the protected area affiliation covers the whole municipality, while the zones are distributed differently within the cadastral area.
Countryside and Protection Zones
The cadastral area of Lány u Libice nad Doubravou lies mainly in Zones II and III of the protected landscape area. In the southern part west of Suchá, the locality Hradiště extends at the edge into Zone I. Lány and Suchá are mainly in Zone II. This zone has a balanced relationship between natural features and human structures, an increased ecological and aesthetic value, and favorable natural conditions for recreation. The information thus shows both the predominant character of Zone II and a special, locally limited area at the edge near Hradiště.
At the southern edge of the settlement stands the “Lípa v Lánech,” designated as a memorial tree. The linden is about 25 meters high. Its location at the edge of the settlement distinguishes it from the buildings in the village center.
Hiking Trails through Lány
Two hiking descriptions provide different orientation. The KČT description published for the 2025 excursion program leads the green-marked route from Libice nad Doubravou to Lány; the route leaves the settlement after about 100 meters. In addition, the hiking loop through the Doubravské údolí also passes through Lány. The figure of about 100 meters refers to the section after which the KČT route leaves the settlement, not to the total length of the hike.
For your selection, the route form is above all a helpful difference: the KČT description specifies a route from Libice nad Doubravou to Lány, while the second route is explicitly a circular trail through the Doubravské údolí. This gives you a choice between a route with named places and a loop through a valley as two different hiking options.
Cycling Route and Local Features
A regional cycling route also takes in the Železné hory: “With the Doubravka through the Železné hory: a geocycling route in the footsteps of tree giants.” It is 38 kilometers long and begins and ends in Libice nad Doubravou. In connection with this tour, the Lánská lípa is said to be 500 years old. It is to be distinguished from the “Lípa v Lánech”: this stands as a memorial tree at the southern edge of Lány and is about 25 meters high.
In the center of Lány there are two other specific landmarks: a wooden bell tower and a stone cross from 1897. For the bell tower, the material is a named feature, and for the cross, the year is part of the description. Together with the memorial linden at the edge of the settlement, this results in a clear spatial distinction between the village center and the southern edge. The hiking descriptions lead through Lány; by contrast, the cycling route lists Libice nad Doubravou as the start and finish.
