Chomutov District offers several different ways to explore: marked trails and a long paved route through the Ore Mountains, historic crafts, and traces ranging from the Bronze Age to the history of the towns. These different facets come to life at places such as the Skanzen Stará Ves open-air museum, Bezručovo údolí Nature Park and Hradiště u Černovic.

Town history and crafts

Chomutov’s historic centre has been an urban conservation area since 1992. The Oblastní muzeum (Regional Museum) dedicates its permanent and temporary exhibitions to regional history; its offerings also include family activities, lectures and workshops. The museum complex also lets you visit St. Catherine’s Church, an observation tower, the town hall cellars and a monastery courtyard. Handcrafted pottery and wooden products are sold at the farmers’ market in Chomutov.

The Skanzen Stará Ves open-air museum explores life in the Ore Mountains in the past, including traditional crafts and gardening. A working Dutch-style windmill is a landmark of the site, with a small vineyard nearby. The permanent exhibitions include lace-making, beekeeping, flax cultivation and processing, and wooden toy-making. The open-air museum is open daily during the summer season. Admission is included with a valid Zoopark ticket.

Hasištejn also offers several reasons to visit: the castle has a restaurant and an observation tower, and cultural events are held there. The event programme may change. Hradiště u Černovic preserves a different kind of historic trace: this protected natural monument is known for Tertiary quartzite containing plant fossils. A 240-metre-long rampart of a Bronze Age hillfort has also been preserved there.

Trails and protected nature

Bezručovo údolí is a 6,500-hectare nature park in the Ore Mountains. Its elevation ranges from about 380 to 850 metres above sea level. You can explore the valley on foot or by bicycle along marked trails. A paved route just under seven kilometres long leads to Třetí mlýn; it is intended for walkers, cyclists and inline skaters. This lets you choose a route to suit your preferred way of getting around, without implying that the routes are all the same length.

A blue hiking route just under eight kilometres long also runs through the Údolí Prunéřovského potoka valley. The valley can be reached by car, bus, bicycle or a weekend train on the Chomutov–Vejprty line. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable in advance. A yellow hiking trail also leads from Chomutov to Hradiště u Černovic. The route and the destination offer two different points of interest for an outing: the trail itself and the natural and historical traces preserved there.

Other natural sites showcase different types of protected areas and landscapes. Novodomské rašeliniště is a protected peat bog reserve and bird area, as well as a regular breeding ground for black grouse. Kýšovický vodopád is considered the highest waterfall in the Ore Mountains. The Podkrušnohorský zoopark Chomutov is home to around 160 animal species from the Palaearctic across 112 hectares.

By the water and in winter

Kamencové jezero covers just under 16 hectares. Its alum-rich water is considered unique in the world. Facilities at the lake include beaches, mini golf, and rowing boat, pedal boat and paddleboard rentals. Cold-water swimming in a natural bathing environment is also practised there. Camping options include cabins and pitches for tents or caravans. As camping and leisure facilities may change seasonally or operationally, check their current availability when making specific plans.

The winter offerings at Skiareál Pyšná include three ski runs, a ski school, a children’s ski park, a snow park and a groomed cross-country ski trail. Facilities and operations are seasonal, so check current conditions before your visit. This gives you concrete options to consider when planning your trip: hiking and cycling trails, water-based activities and seasonal winter sports.
