Mašťov combines architectural history with a protected castle park, a fire brigade museum and a Jewish cemetery. Its churches also tell stories of different eras. Important for planning: the castle is currently closed to the public. Check access conditions before visiting.
Castle and churches: a comparison of architectural history
Mašťov Castle is a Baroque castle on the site of a Gothic castle first mentioned in 1281. The year refers to the castle’s first mention, not the construction date of today’s castle. This keeps two periods clearly distinct: the Gothic predecessor castle and the Baroque castle. The castle is currently closed to the public; if you are planning a visit, check the access conditions in advance.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is originally Gothic and was remodelled in the Baroque style. The historic Mladota family crypt is also located there. The Church of St Barbara is also originally Gothic, but was given its Neo-Romanesque design in the 19th century. The churches show two different paths from Gothic origins: one was remodelled in the Baroque style, while the other received a later Neo-Romanesque design. Several Baroque statues add to the town’s attractions.
Castle park and cemetery
Mašťov Castle Park is a protected garden heritage site and part of the castle grounds. The park has a network of footpaths, two ponds and the Dubá II watercourse. Alongside the churches and castle, the park draws attention to the design of a historic outdoor space. Its protected status makes the garden itself a cultural heritage subject.
The Jewish cemetery in Mašťov preserves its historic layout, tombstones, perimeter wall and access road. Together, these features give an overview of the whole site: not only the individual tombstones, but also their arrangement and enclosure form part of its inherited heritage.
Fire brigade history and pilgrimage tradition
The Mašťov Fire Brigade Museum displays historic helmets, uniforms, and portable and non-portable fire pumps. The collection also includes medals and badges, diplomas, and fire brigade-themed toys. It brings together different aspects of fire brigade history: equipment and clothing alongside awards, written records and toys. This offers a distinct perspective alongside Mašťov’s architectural and ecclesiastical history.
Traditional pilgrimages take place in Mašťov in August. If you would like to plan your stay around one, check the specific dates in advance.
Natural value of Radechovské skály
Radechovské skály comprises rock faces with warmth- and drought-loving flora, as well as surrounding woodland. The site is exceptionally valuable for zoology and botany; protected species find breeding and refuge habitats there. This offers a different focus from the architectural and garden heritage sites: the emphasis is on habitats, plants and wildlife.
Practical information
The Mašťov urban conservation area is suitable for wheelchair users. If access to a particular monument is important for your plans, check it separately.
