Nová Víska combines a small settlement in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) with striking traces of its history. Situated at an altitude of about 650 metres above sea level and among hills, the village is characterised by permanent grassland and an almost complete lack of buildings. For travellers looking for a holiday apartment in the Ore Mountains, this points to a destination where landscape and local history take centre stage.

A settlement among the hills

Nová Víska currently has 15 buildings. The upper and lower parts of the settlement form a single unit; only a few houses remain of what was once an extensive settlement. The current number of buildings and the historic remains show different aspects of the village: its present-day building stock and traces of a once larger settlement.

From Nova vila to depopulation

Nová Víska was first mentioned in 1526 in connection with a settlement believed to have been founded by Cistercians from Grünhain under the name Nova vila. Its historic German name was Neudorfel. The settlement belonged to the Přísečnice estate. The Puschhof estate also marks a change in local land use: it ceased to exist in 1728; a sheepfold was later built on its site. On 1 January 1979, the settlement was officially dissolved as a result of depopulation. From the first mention through the later use of Puschhof to this historic turning point, the village’s recorded history spans several periods.

Penitential cross and viewpoint

The penitential cross stood beside an old track above the former village of Nová Víska (Neudörfl), towards the small settlement of Krčma (Kretscham). Its date is cautiously placed in the second half of the 18th century; an axe is carved into the cross. The “Vyhlídka u kříže a Kepsteinu” viewpoint is located by the penitential cross and Kepstein. Nová Víska also offers a view of the Tušimice power station. Alongside the settlement’s history, visitors will find a named viewpoint and another notable sight in the area.

Protected habitats in Podmilesy

The cadastral area of Nová Víska u Domašína is part of the European Site of Community Importance Podmilesy. Its semi-natural calcareous dry grasslands and scrub formations, which support significant populations of orchids, are protected. The valley is also home to an almost continuous ash and alder floodplain forest. The area’s description therefore encompasses both open, calcareous habitats and a forest in the valley. Those interested in the natural side of the Ore Mountains will find specific features here that differ from the settlement’s history.

There are two distinct aspects to consider when choosing where to stay: the development of a once extensive settlement and Podmilesy’s protected habitats. Consider which of these topics you would like to focus on more during your trip.
