Libědice brings together several cultural and historical landmarks with a direct connection to cycling. The Church of St. Vitus, the Calvary group and Marian works represent different periods; cyclists turn off cycling route 3080 towards the town. To help decide whether to visit, consider whether you are mainly interested in sacred architecture and art history, or whether you want to include Libědice as a destination or stop on a cycling tour.

The Church of St. Vitus and its history

The Church of St. Vitus was built between 1682 and 1694 on the site of an earlier building first mentioned in 1358. The present-day church has been preserved in almost unchanged form. A fortress may have been built below the church in the 1570s. These dates should be distinguished: 1358 marks the first mention of the earlier building, the 1570s are only a possible date for the fortress, and 1682 to 1694 is the construction period of the present-day church. Anyone interested in architectural history will find several historical reference points here, without needing to assign them all to a single building phase.

Baroque sculpture and Marian works

The late Baroque Calvary group, made of Tschernowitz sandstone, dates from 1738; its artist is still unknown. The group comprises a cross bearing the body of Christ, a kneeling Mary Magdalene, and figures of the Virgin Mary and St. John on the pedestal. After 1975, the work was moved to Libědice from the municipality of Brany. Its date of origin, arrangement of figures and later history in different locations provide distinct points of reference for viewing the monument.

Two other Marian works mark their own dates: a Baroque column with a statue of the Virgin Mary dates from 1704. Another statue of the Virgin Mary in Libědice dates from 1724 and is associated with Vetter. Comparing them with the Calvary group makes it possible to distinguish these three monuments and their different dates.

Local life and historical connections

Marie Zuzana Smyslovská is associated with Libědice Castle, where she stayed at least occasionally. The end of the carnival season is also among the traditional festivities celebrated in Libědice. If you are planning a trip around this occasion, check the specific event dates in advance. This lets you treat the festivities as a distinct, time-specific focus alongside the cultural and historical attractions that are there year-round.

Cycling and finding your way around

Cyclists turn off cycling route 3080 towards Libědice. Check route conditions and signage before setting out. There is a public electric bike charging station in the garden of the Kotva restaurant. Cyclists and local residents can charge for free during a stop; check in advance whether the charging station is available. A marked walking and cycling route has been created to make walks and outings easier to navigate. It is advisable to check its current condition before using it.

There is public parking in the centre, behind the former grocery store near the municipal office. Check its current availability before you arrive. The Liboc is the only body of water in the cadastral area of Libědice with a continuous year-round flow. This local landscape feature complements the themes of cultural history and cycling.

Choose your stay to suit your interests

If you are considering Libědice as a possible overnight stop, tailor your search to the reason for your stay: the church and sculptures offer a cultural and historical focus, while the cycling route, marked trail and charging station provide a connection to cycling. Consider which of these aspects matters most to you, and factor the information about the route, signage and availability into your plans.
