A real blast furnace was built in Kovářská in 1599; it was one of the first in Bohemia. Kovářská’s origins are connected with the mining and processing of iron ore. Historically, five hammer mills stood within the area of today’s municipality.
Ironworking and Local History
The Mrtvou cestou na Vápenku walking trail starts in Kovářská’s market square and passes the remains of the former ironworks. Its starting point in the market square and its route past the former ironworks give the walk a specific historical connection. This makes it possible to explore the area’s history both through its early industrial roots and along a trail connected with the remains of ironworking.
Church, Marian Column and Chapel
The Baroque Church of St Michael was built in 1709–1710. It has a coffered ceiling decorated with images of saints. A Baroque Marian column dating from 1706 stands in front of the church. The column is therefore a few years older than the church building and adds a distinct historical note alongside the church’s architecture.
The Chapel of St Mark represents a different period of construction: it was built in 1913 near an iron cross dating from 1871. The chapel was thus built 42 years after the cross. Kovářská therefore offers more than a single era to explore through its local buildings and memorials.
Museum and Memorial
The Museum of the Air Battle over the Ore Mountains in Kovářská commemorates airmen of all nationalities who lost their lives over the Czech Republic and Germany in one of the fiercest air battles of the Second World War. One display case focuses on Lt. Raine’s crew and aircraft. As the exhibition may change, check before your visit whether this display case is currently on view. The Švédský hrob memorial is located on the road just beyond Kovářská railway station.
Walking, Cycling and Winter Routes
The Tři Špičáky route leads to a stone organ formation and to Velký Špičák, which offers impressive panoramic views. Kovářská railway station, on the Chomutov–Vejprty line, serves as an access point for the route. If you are considering travelling by train, check the timetable in advance. The Krušnohorské oko gravel route also starts in Kovářská and passes the railway station and the former lime kiln. The station plays different roles on the two routes: it serves as an access point for the Tři Špičáky route and is also along the gravel route.
The 12.5 km cross-country skiing loop around Kovářská is maintained; grooming and trail conditions are seasonal. Sjezdovka Kovářská is a 350 m ski slope with a lift, whose operation and facilities may vary by season. The two options differ in activity and route type: a loop for cross-country skiing and a lift-served slope for alpine skiing. Check current conditions before planning a winter trip.
Choose a Holiday Rental Based on Your Travel Plans
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Kovářská, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on: industrial history and sacred architecture, one of the routes mentioned above, or seasonal winter sports. When choosing specific dates, it is worth taking the conditions for your chosen activity into account.
