You can get to know Spořice through an unusual building site and a striking tower: the Church of St. Bartholomew stands on an island formed by a moat, and its slender Late Gothic tower leans. Other features include a historic farmstead on the village square, archaeological traces from various periods, and sports facilities today. Spořice thus brings together architectural history and present-day leisure opportunities.

The Church of St. Bartholomew

The church stands in the south of Spořice on an island formed by a moat. It was converted into a fortified church in the second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. It has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. It is part of a group of fortified churches that together form a circuit around Chomutov. This places the building in a broader context, while its position on the island in the moat remains a distinctive feature of Spořice.

The slender Late Gothic tower leans and is compared with the famous Tower of Pisa. The comparison refers to its tilt; its classification as Late Gothic points to its architectural style. The church therefore offers a chance to consider an architectural feature alongside its history as a fortified place of worship.

History on the Village Square and Archaeological Traces

Spořice was first mentioned in 1281 in a document concerning the transfer of property by the Teutonic Order in Chomutov. A historic agricultural estate stands on the village square. It comprised a multi-storey residential building, a gate, and farm buildings. Above the gate is the inscription “HANS KELLER 1567”. The farmstead adds another perspective on local history to the church architecture: here, the focus is on residential and farm buildings, as well as a gate bearing a specific inscription.

Archaeological finds date back further. A rescue excavation southeast of Spořice uncovered a settlement from the Early Bronze Age. Settlements of the Hallstatt and La Tène cultures were also identified. A grave containing personal jewellery comes from the La Tène settlement. A multicultural settlement is located at the Střelnice site; finds from it are kept at the Chomutov District Museum. The evidence thus spans several distinct periods, while the Střelnice finds add a specific connection to the locality.

Sports and Recreation

The Spořice Sports Hall is located near the Spořice swimming pool. It can be booked by sports teams as well as by the general public. If you are planning to use it, check the booking conditions in advance. Fitness Gym Spořice is aimed not only at athletes but especially at the general public. It offers a traditional weight room with a cardio area, as well as an equipped room for group training. If a particular group activity is important to you, check the current programme details.

The Sports Hall also has a Finnish sauna for up to eight people. A cold-water pool or showers are available for use when taking a sauna. Check sauna availability before your arrival. This way, the locality’s cultural attractions and the sports and sauna facilities described here can be considered as different highlights for your stay.
