Veliká Ves combines the Dubá stream and two ponds by the village square with a rich architectural and settlement history. For a trip that takes in both landscape and culture, there are two ways to explore: follow the watercourse through the village, or discover the history of St. James’s Church and the castle. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can see whether this combination suits your travel interests.

Stream, Ponds and the Village’s Location

The Dubá stream flows through Veliká Ves and feeds two ponds on the village square, one on each side of the road. The village lies upstream of the confluence of the Dubá and Leská streams. This creates two distinct landscape features: the stream running through the village and its meeting with a second watercourse. In the past, the Dubá also powered a mill in Veliká Ves, making the watercourse both a feature of the village and part of its history of use.

A local road from Chotěbudice connects Veliká Ves with the Kadaň–Podbořany state road.

Church, Castle and Historical Details

St. James’s Church is an 18th-century Baroque building erected on the site of an earlier church. Statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Augustine, dating from 1773, stand in front of the west portal. The date places the statues in the 18th century as well and adds to the historical context of the church building.

The bell tower offers two different ways to tell the time: a sundial is on its south side, while the face of a mechanical clock is on its east side. This makes it possible to compare two methods of timekeeping on the same tower.

The former cemetery gate, dating from 1678, was converted into a war memorial.

Veliká Ves Castle was built by the Augustinians of Karlov between 1662 and 1762 as the provost’s summer residence. From 1890 to 1896, it was remodelled in the Neo-Renaissance style. The construction and later remodelling mark distinct periods in its history.

The castle’s former farmyard is now used for agritourism and various social events. If you plan to attend, check the current options locally in advance.

The Svatojakubská pouť (St. James’s pilgrimage festival) was held in Veliká Ves in 2006 and every year from 2015 to 2022. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current dates in advance.

Archaeological Traces

Archaeological finds in the cadastral area of Veliká Ves attest to settlement during much of prehistory and the early historic period. The greatest concentration of finds comes from the sand pit west of Veliká Ves. Rescue excavations were carried out there in advance in 1974 and 1975. The area’s settlement history therefore reaches much further back than the construction phases of the church and castle.
