Vrskmaň combines local history, geological features and two cycling routes; lignite mining is also part of the area's history. The village lies about 6 km northeast of Chomutov, on the edge of the Vršany open-cast mining area. There is a geopark in the northern part of the village, while the cycling routes head in different directions. Depending on your interests, you can choose between historical landmarks, geological history and exploring on two wheels.

Chapels, Monuments and Local History

The first written mention of Vrskmaň dates from 1417. An earlier historical layer is represented by the Baroque chapel of 1776, on the site of which a Neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1898. This later chapel was demolished between 1972 and 1974 and no longer survives.

A surviving statue of St John of Nepomuk dates from 1886. The Marian column, with a statue of the Virgin Mary, stands at the southern edge of the village square and dates from 1887. At the crossroads in front of house no. 4 in Vrskmaň there were three reconciliation crosses and a large Baroque cross with a sculpture of Christ dating from 1731. One of the reconciliation crosses has been lost. The statue of St John of Nepomuk and the group of crosses were moved to Vrskmaň from the abandoned village of Kyjice.

Geopark and Mining History

The geopark is located in the northern part of Vrskmaň, in the village park. It features examples of North Bohemian rocks and was created to display rocks and minerals from nearby mines. The exhibition also includes finds from the Dobkovičky quarry and the České středohoří region. Exhibition details may change; check the latest information before visiting.

The former Karel lignite mine, also known as Bedřich, was located west of Vrskmaň. It operated from around the turn of the 1850s and 1860s until 1885. Together with its location on the edge of the Vršany mining area, this history gives the village a clear connection to lignite mining.

Two Cycling Routes and an Ice Rink

Cycling Route 3114 runs along the trackbed of a disused railway line from Chomutov towards Zaječice. Route 3106 connects Vrskmaň with Vysoká Pec via the dam of the Újezd Reservoir, and continues from there to Jezeří. The routes differ in their listed destinations and sections; choose according to the direction you want to travel. As route conditions may change, check them before setting out on a specific ride.

Another sports facility is Benders Arena, a covered ice rink of about 300 m². Individual training is offered for hockey players and figure skaters. The programme and facility details may change; check them before visiting.

Bus Connections and Events

Vrskmaň is served by public buses as part of the Ústí nad Labem Region Integrated Transport System; regular bus services connect it with Chomutov and Jirkov. As timetables may change, check the latest connections before travelling.

At the Vrskmaň Municipality Harvest Festival, visitors have the opportunity, among other things, to see agricultural machinery. Dates vary; check them against your travel dates.
