Chomutov combines waterside recreation and wildlife watching with historic buildings and exhibitions. At Kamencové jezero, leisure and sports activities sit alongside the lake’s unusual origins. The zoopark has its own focus on animals from several regions. In the historic centre and museums, you can explore architecture and the city’s history.
Kamencové jezero and the zoopark
Kamencové jezero has the largest floating pier in the Czech Republic and offers special recreational opportunities as well as a wide range of leisure and sports activities. Some facilities may vary seasonally; if you have a particular activity in mind, check in advance whether it is available during your trip. The lake’s origins are also remarkable: around 1809, an old alum mine was flooded. Today’s leisure facilities and a history shaped by mining thus come together in one place.
Chomutov Zoopark covers 112 hectares. It is home to 160 animal species from Europe, Asia and North Africa, the stated regions of origin within the Palearctic. The species composition may change; check detailed species information before your visit if particular animals are important to you. Another special feature is a 30-hectare enclosure for free rides among bison, deer, mouflons and saiga antelopes. The rides are a distinct feature of the zoopark; find out about their operation and schedule before your trip.
Historic centre and exhibitions
Chomutov’s historic centre was declared an urban conservation area in 1992. Notable buildings include the Church of St Catherine, one of the oldest Early Gothic churches in Europe. The Jesuit complex includes the Church of St Ignatius, the Špejchar City Gallery, an arcaded courtyard, the Chomutov Library and the Regional Museum. Sacred architecture, a gallery, a library and a museum thus stand alongside one another as distinct parts of a historic complex.
The Městská věž is almost 54 metres tall and houses a permanent exhibition on the historical development of Chomutov. If you are planning your visit around the exhibition, check its availability before your trip. The Regional Museum also has a permanent exhibition titled “Views into Prehistory”; check its availability before your visit as well. This lets you combine an interest in the city’s history with a look at prehistory, without implying that the two topics are covered by the same exhibition.
Crafts, fortifications and railway vehicles
About one kilometre above Chomutov is the Muzeum čs. opevnění Na Kočičáku. A path just under one kilometre long leads to military fortifications, trenches and forgotten machine-gun emplacements. If you are planning to visit, check the opening arrangements beforehand.
Skanzen Stará ves presents examples of crafts and agriculture typical of regions of the Ore Mountains in permanent exhibitions and accompanying events. The events may change. At the Železniční depozitář, you can see almost a hundred railway vehicles of various gauges and a wide range of types. The composition of this collection may change over time. Crafts and agriculture, military fortifications and railway vehicles thus offer different ways to explore a stay in and around Chomutov.
