Strupčice offers different ways to explore its history and landscape: archaeological traces reach far back in time, the church and monuments point to different historical periods, and at the Maják lookout tower, maps show how the landscape has changed through coal mining. There is also an educational trail, a cycling route and activities for an active break. You can tailor your stay to what interests you most: historic places, comparing landscapes or getting active.

History in Different Places

The area around Strupčice was settled more than 4,000 years ago. Strupčice itself was first mentioned in writing in 1352. The Church of Saint Wenceslas dates back to the 14th century and was rebuilt in 1780. These dates take you from early settlement in the surrounding area through the Middle Ages to a later structural change to the church.

The monuments also offer their own historical reference points. In a park by the stream behind the church stands a state-protected sandstone statue of Johann Vetter dating from 1723. It originally came from the abandoned village of Tušimice. The church grounds are also home to a state-protected, roughly hewn stone cross from the 16th century, originally from Vrchnice. The monuments differ in their origins and dates, as well as in their locations.

Maják and the Changing Landscape

The wooden Maják lookout tower stands on a former spoil heap about 0.5 kilometres northeast of Strupčice. Four painted maps compare today’s panorama with the landscape before coal mining and show the vanished villages below the Ore Mountains. They provide concrete points of reference for comparing the landscapes. If you plan to look at the maps during your visit, check their condition on site.

At the western edge of Strupčice, an approximately ten-metre-high mining face is still accessible near preserved brickworks chimneys. The lookout tower and its maps, and the mining face, each point to different aspects of the area’s landscape history. The Chomutov–Strupčice cycle route passes about 500 metres from the Maják viewpoint. As trail conditions and signage may change, check both before your cycling trip.

Educational Trail and Activities

The Strupčice educational trail offers printable worksheets for children aged 7 to 11 and for people aged 11 and over. The Chomutovsko mobile app complements the existing educational trail with two child-friendly versions: one for younger children and one for older schoolchildren. If you plan to use the app, check its availability in advance.

Sportovní areál Strupčice includes a swimming pool, mini golf, beach volleyball courts and a campsite. Alongside the historical attractions and educational trail, these offer other ways to spend your free time. Opening times and the availability of individual facilities may change; check the latest information before your visit.

Events and Garlic Specialties

The traditional Garlic Festival and the St Wenceslas Pilgrimage in Strupčice are classified as market and fair events. One edition took place on 28 September 2024; dates and programmes may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates for the relevant year.

At the 2019 Garlic Festival, food stalls served traditional garlic specialties, including garlic soup, potato pancakes, garlic strudel, koláčky and spreads. The selection may vary from one edition to the next.
