Hora Svatého Šebestiána combines local history with hiking: the town hall, column, and monuments represent different historical chapters, while two routes make the town a waypoint or starting point. There is also a nearby raised bog. When planning your stay, you can decide first whether to focus on cultural history, a hike, or the landscape.

Mountain Town History and Monuments

Hora Svatého Šebestiána was probably founded as a mining town on the Chomutov estate in the first half of the 16th century. In 1597, Emperor Rudolf II elevated it to the status of a royal mining town. The former town hall and courthouse was built around 1800 in the Empire style; a cartouche bearing the town coat of arms is located above its portal. The building thus brings together its former administrative and judicial functions with a specific architectural feature.

The Holy Trinity Column stands on the northern edge of town. It dates from 1908, is a copy of an older Baroque work, and was declared a cultural monument in 2022. The local memorial to the victims of the Second World War commemorates 110 fallen soldiers and residents. A lost building is also part of the town’s history: the former Church of St. Sebastian was demolished on March 25, 1967. The historical picture thus encompasses surviving buildings, remembrance, and the loss of a former church building.

Railway Relics and Memorials

Another trace of the past is the railway bridge near Hora Svatého Šebestiána. It was part of railway line No. 137 Křimov–Reitzenhain; today, only its outer abutments remain. Near the Hora Svatého Šebestiána–Reitzenhain border crossing, the Stülpnerův pomník commemorates Karl Stülpner, regarded as the Ore Mountains’ most famous poacher. The bridge relic and the memorial highlight different aspects: the former railway history, the latter Karl Stülpner.

Hiking Routes and Practical Information

The eastern Hřebenovka Krušné hory is 143 kilometers long and passes through Hora Svatého Šebestiána, which serves as a waypoint or junction. The entire route is marked in red. The Pochod smrti na Chomutovsku memorial route is different: it starts in Hora Svatého Šebestiána, is about 17 kilometers long, runs mostly downhill, and ends in Chomutov, in Horní Ves or at the town cemetery. This gives you two distinct options: a long-distance route on which the town is a waypoint or junction, and a shorter memorial route that starts here. Check the route details before setting out, as they may change.

In April 2026, two modern wooden tourist shelters with emergency overnight accommodation opened in the town. They provide official infrastructure for the Stezka Českem and Hřebenovka long-distance trails. Each shelter can accommodate four people; you will need to bring your own sleeping mat and sleeping bag.

Fishing is permitted at the municipal ponds with a permit issued by the municipal office. As permit requirements may change, check with the municipal office for the current conditions before fishing.

Raised Bog Nearby

The Prameniště Chomutovky nature reserve is nearby and is characterized mainly by a raised bog. It adds a natural landscape focus to the architectural and railway heritage. When planning, you can choose between local history, a hiking route, fishing with a permit, and the bog landscape.
