Between 2 and 65 million years ago, a river flowed where Údlice stands today, emptying into the so-called Žatec Lake. The site is known for fossilized trunks, leaves, roots, as well as tree blossoms and fruits. Its geological profile therefore includes both larger plant parts and blossoms and fruits. This time frame lies far before the historical evidence that also characterizes Údlice. Geology thus offers a distinct theme alongside church architecture and local history.

Church, Moat and Chateau

A prominent historical landmark is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Povýšení sv. Kříže). Its Romanesque altar niche, the apse, is dated to before 1250; the church is first mentioned in writing in 1247. These two dates refer to different things: one dates the apse, while the other marks the first written record of the church. The date for the apse concerns a single architectural feature and should not be taken as the construction year of the entire church. The church is one of the most significant religious buildings in the Ústecký kraj region. In the past, a moat fortified the church and the cemetery that stood beside it. The Chateau Údlice is also part of the local landscape, with a farmyard and a small park adjoining it. An apse usually forms a semicircular end to the church interior.

Jewish Life and Remembrance

Údlice was one of the main centers of Jewish settlement in the Chomutov region. A Jewish house of prayer with an associated religious school was already here toward the end of the 15th century. The so-called Old Jewish Cemetery may date back to the 16th century; its oldest tombstones are from the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1864, a second, so-called New Jewish Cemetery was established near the road to Jirkov. In the early 1960s, a memorial was created there to commemorate the victims of the death march who died in Údlice in 1945.

Leisure and Getting There

A seasonal outdoor swimming complex is located at Lázeňská 100. Check its current opening status before visiting, as the facility is explicitly seasonal. Regional bus route 522569 is listed as the Chomutov–Údlice–Velemyšleves connection. Check the timetable before travelling so you can plan your journey according to current departure times.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Údlice, the town’s profile can help you choose a destination. The church and Jewish heritage provide a cultural and historical focus; the geological site adds a much older time frame. The seasonal outdoor swimming complex is a different, time-of-year-dependent attraction. You can weigh cultural history, geological traces and seasonal leisure as distinct reasons to visit.
