Jirkov combines the city’s history with exhibitions, green spaces and routes into the Ore Mountains. Historic buildings and underground structures in the town centre tell stories of different eras. There are also attractions that explore art, firefighting history and local sights in various ways. When planning a stay, you can choose between culture, outdoor activities and excursions in the surrounding area.

City History and Exhibitions

An exhibition in the Městská věž is dedicated to the name Jiří. It features 40 representative exhibits from visual, dramatic and musical arts, as well as sport, travel, photography and science. The displays thus range from art and research to topics from public life.

The Městské historické sklepy were excavated between 1555 and 1595 in a sandstone hill in the town centre. This underground system is the oldest of five comparable underground mining complexes in the Czech Republic. The visitor route was officially opened in May 2007.

The Děkanský kostel sv. Jiljí also brings together different building phases: the church stands on the site of an early Gothic fortified church dating from around 1300. It was rebuilt in 1568, with parts of the earlier building preserved. The Jirkov synagogue was built in 1846–1847 in the Classicist style. In 1853, it was consecrated by the district rabbi David Pick from Teplice.

The cultural walk “Po stopách rodiny Brokofů” leads to Jirkov’s Baroque sculptural heritage. It complements the city’s established cultural attractions with a themed look at its sculpture.

Museums and Special Experiences

The Firefighting Museum features a permanent exhibition on the development of firefighting technology and the history of Jirkov’s volunteer fire brigade. An interactive computer game also simulates firefighter training, responding to a traffic accident and fire suppression. Historical developments and simulated emergency scenarios are presented side by side.

The multimedia city exhibition uses audiovisual projections to explore local sights, notable figures and historical topics, from the past to the present. The Kludského vila houses the city library, lecture rooms, an exhibition about Karel Kludský and a recreation area for children and adults. The villa’s park has arena-shaped pavilions and playgrounds with circus elements.

“Hledá se kmotr” is a geolocation game that introduces Jirkov’s history and sights in an entertaining way. It can be played throughout the year; allow at least an hour and a half. For climbing enthusiasts, the Climbing Arena has 50 climbing lines and 150 climbing routes, including bouldering routes. Climbing lessons with professional trainers and climbing camps are also offered there.

Green Spaces and Outdoor Activities

The Telšské údolí runs along the Bělá stream from the western edge of Jirkov through Orasín and into the Ore Mountains. It is a suitable destination for walkers and cyclists. The Smetanovy sady have a different green character: dense, continuous woodland and several small clearings give the park an almost forest-like feel.

Olejomlýnský Park has play equipment for children, a street workout area and ramps. The different green spaces offer a range of ways to spend time outdoors, from a quiet visit to the tree-filled park to designated play equipment and sports facilities.

A cycling trip starts at the Červený Hrádek campsite with outdoor swimming pool and climbs from 310 m to 890 m in the direction of the Ore Mountains plateau. The outdoor pool has a large pool with slides, as well as a children’s pool with a paddling area.

A Trip to Červený Hrádek Castle Park

About 2 km northeast of Jirkov, at the foot of the Ore Mountains, lies Červený Hrádek Castle Park. It is listed as a cultural monument in the register of immovable cultural monuments and contains rare trees and shrubs, including the cucumber magnolia. Visitors can freely access the castle park, courtyard, historic passageways and the Gallery of Generations. The Chapel of St John the Baptist and the castle interiors can be visited on a guided tour.

The Jirkov Tourist Information Centre provides visitors with information about sights, natural areas, tourism and leisure activities in Jirkov and the surrounding area. This can help you choose between the different options for your stay, from city history to nature and outdoor activities.
