Forests, trails and seasonal experiences
In the Český les landscape, extensive forests alternate with pastures, meadows and overgrown open land. Its character comes from this juxtaposition: closed forest areas give way to open and once again overgrown areas. If you want to explore the landscape on foot, you can plan the hiking route from Dům přírody Českého lesa to Chodovské skály. It is 9 kilometres long and rated as moderate. Its length and difficulty provide a concrete guide for planning your day.
Guided excursions are offered in the Domažlice municipal forests for organised groups and individuals. Two route options cover the themes of forest, wildlife and history. This offers different thematic approaches: a designated hike to Chodovské skály or a guided excursion combining nature and history.
Cross-country ski trails are groomed around Čerchov in winter. As grooming is seasonal, check the current conditions before setting off. For cyclists, route CT3 is designated along the Domažlice–Luženičky–Blížejov–Osvračín–Staňkov section.
Discover Chod culture
The Chodské slavnosti combine Chod folklore with the Vavřinec pilgrimage. The festival has been held since 1955. Those interested in regional traditions will find two interconnected cultural themes here: folklore and pilgrimage.
The Chodský hrad now houses the Muzeum Chodska, with its rich and varied exhibition. The Muzeum J. Jindřicha displays numerous folk-culture objects collected in the Chodsko region. Its holdings also include an extensive collection of reverse glass paintings. The two museums therefore offer different points of interest: a varied exhibition in Chodský hrad and collections with a particular focus on folk culture and reverse glass paintings.
Traces of the town’s history
The surviving remains of Domažlice’s town fortifications date back to the town’s founding in the second half of the 13th century. Dolní brána dates to around 1270. Bezděkovská branka was probably built towards the end of the 15th century. The two gates thus mark different points in time: Dolní brána belongs to the town’s early history, while Bezděkovská branka dates from considerably later.
Practical information for Horšovský Týn
The square right next to the château in Horšovský Týn serves as a visitor car park. There is a bicycle rack at the entrance gate to the château grounds; however, bicycles are not allowed inside the grounds. Check the current parking and bicycle regulations before your visit.
Regional products
Products from Bořice include Chodské koláče; Domažlice is known for bakery and confectionery products. If you want to visit producers specifically, check availability before setting off. This allows you to include an interest in regional products in your plans without tying your visit to a particular route or length of stay.
