Gothic architecture and Baroque painting meet in the Church of St. James the Elder in Stankov. The single-nave building is originally Gothic and dates from the early 15th century; a cemetery wall with a gate surrounds it. Inside, Baroque ceiling paintings and fragments of Gothic wall paintings have been preserved. Different artistic periods thus stand side by side in the church.
Stankov between two banks
Stankov lies on the Radbuza between Plzeň and Domažlice. The river divides the town into Staňkov město on the left bank and Staňkov ves on the right bank. The Radbuza therefore serves not only to locate the town between the two cities, but also describes how it is divided. The riverbank is the key difference between the two named parts.
Chapel and trails
Another prominent landmark is the Chapel of Panny Marie Lurdské on Mastník. The mason Václav Vacík built it in 1898. Compared with the Church of St. James the Elder, which dates from the early 15th century, the chapel represents a different historical period. It offers views of the surrounding area and is visited for walks and relaxation. If you are planning a visit, you can check current information about accessibility in advance, as access details may change.
The forests around Stankov also invite visitors to go for walks, along forest trails. The chapel and forests offer different experiences: at the chapel, views and relaxation are part of the visit, while the forests offer trails through the landscape. Seasonal forestry restrictions may apply. So check for current information before planning a walk.
Cultural venues and events
Lidový dům was completed in 1931 and extensively renovated from 1984 to 1988. Today it hosts balls, social events, dance classes and amateur theatre performances. The programme may change; if you would like to plan your trip around an event, it is a good idea to check the current schedule.
The Staňkov puppet theatre is on Dělnická Street, in the Lidový dům and cinema complex. The puppet theatre was revived in 1995 and has a long tradition. Alongside the various uses of Lidový dům, the same complex also has its own puppet theatre.
The traditional Jakubská pouť takes place on the Sunday after the feast of Saint James. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check that year's programme in advance. The Svatojakubský sbor gives concerts in Stankov and abroad. A past performance tradition is recorded for the amateur theatre group: it used to stage two plays a year, with four to five performances of each.
